Oil change with oil cooler

I haven't read anythingabout this but I am guessing it is common knowledge. Once I install the oil cooler, every oil change I have remove the front bumper cover, and remove the oil cooler, empty it out, then re install it, and re fill it after the oil from the pan drained correct? And when I first install it I have to install then fill the oil cooler itself before I put oil back into the block and pan itself correct? Sorry if this has been posted before. I am getting close to 1200 miles on my car and I want to do everything right without second guessing mysef.

You can do that if you wish, but its not necessary. Cars with factory equipped coolers dont have to do this.

Some people opt to leave the ~1qt of "used" oil in the system and rely on the other 5 to offset the difference. I will probably be removing the oil cooler and draining it 1 out of every 3 oil changes myself.

Depending on how the cooler is installed, removal of the bumper will more than likely not be necessary, especially if the fittings are facing downwards.

You have no issues at all...Just pull off one of the AN fittings at the Adapter plate and let it drain.. If you installed with fittings "UP" like most of the kits out there, just undo BOTH AN fittings and use air pressure to blow the oil out. A little messy, but way easier then front end disassembly. If you're so anal that you need to get every drop out, then by all means turn this in to a major project. Personally, it's really not worth the effort (or necessary) IMO..

and NO, you don't have to manually fill the cooler before starting the engine....The VQ pump is very high volume and will fill it virtually instantly. Fresh Oil that is not up to temp will be largely sent to the engine rather than the cooler anyway (assuming the correct use of a thermostatic plate)

haha didn't even think about removing the fittings at the sandwich plate. good thinkin' lincoln

now i just need to find a -10 AN compressor adapter. heh.

lolllll i thought of blowing the oil out of the cooler as well but thought you guys would think it's ridiculous and the idea would get shut down hard. But now that mod has said it, it is another option! You just need to cover the blow area with something clean and aim the other fitting down at the drain bucket and blow rite? HAHAHA this whole conversation is just funny.

Hmmm sounds easy enough. So is there a difference to installing the kit with the hoses on the bottom instead of the top? I remember reading something in one of the many oil cooler threads.

edit: Ok so I install the cooler, put 5 qts in, run the car for a min or so, then add an additional quart or until it reads full is that how you guys do it?

sounds about right, but you may not even need to wait a full minute. i've heard the VQ pump is a beast.
