I went over it right in the middle of the car and there was a couple of big horrific bangs! The car kept driving normally and there were no new noises. I has a look underneath and saw that the rear tunnel brace was a little damaged and a small dent in one of the exhaust pipes. After an inspection by my mechanic I'm told that it appears that the end of the tail shaft/front of diff was hit by it. This has somehow damaged the front diff bearing which is now causing the whining noise after a few days. A small camera was poked into the diff and the crown wheel and pinion appear ok, but the diff will have to be taken apart to fully check, have the bearing replaced and anything else that may be damaged and then all rebuilt again. The drive shaft itself will also need to be checked and possibly rebalanced.
I would have never called this!
FWIW, I ran over a chunk of concrete a few months ago and got my insurance to cover the damage

Good luck with the repairs

Thanks about reminding me I could do an insurance claim on it. I'd forgotten to consider that.

Default Update:

After having the diff dropped out twice, bearings replaced, etc, the diff was still whining when you lifted off the throttle. My "shop" put my original OEM crown wheel and pinion back in (I was running the 4.08 FD) and all was good and quiet. The (damaged) 4.08 pinion was put between centers on a lathe, a dial indicator applied and guess what? It's slightly bent and therefore not running concentrically which was causing the whining noise! All this because I ran over a bit of light gauge RHS steel tube that had fallen off a truck or something!
I have now ordered what will be my second 4.08 FD set! I've yet to try an insurance claim
