It's for added insurance against knocking when pushing the car hard (race track) in hot weather.
I also fill up with 100 octane after the car has been in storage to bring the old gas back up to a decent octane. I drive around easy until I'm at about 1/2 tank then go fill er up with 100. I agree though. Using 100 octane on the street when your car is not tuned for it is not going to net any power gains.
