Any idea when you'll have her on the dyno for a tune? Were the pistons expensive? I wonder how much of a difference the higher compression makes.

I don't have a cost breakdown for the individual engine parts, but the whole thing was $6400. The main goal is to create a highly reliable track-oriented build. Hence it also has the CJM oil pan, road race pump, and eventually I'll add the RJM oil pump gears.

It's on the dyno now for break-in, so I'll have numbers soon, probably next week. Starting from my previous EcuTek tune, we had to adjust the throttle table down a bit because it was too twitchy with all the extra torque.

I'm assuming you have the stage 1 cams How does the engine sound? Is there that 'lobe lobe lobe' noise some cars with cams have? a video with audio when it's all done would be great if possible.

Stage 1, yes. It definitely has a different character to it, I'll post up a video along with a full write up about the build soon.

'lobe lobe lobe'

I've heard lumpy idles called many things, but never that!

brucelidat 07-24-2016 08:33 PM

i didn't really know how to describe it, but someone else called it that and it stuck, haha. We were commenting on the idle sound from 1slowz's super NA build that had jun cams, a dry sump, custom manifold and other stuff.

The term is "cam lope" used by old-school engine builders to describe the characteristic variation in sound of an idling engine with big lift and significant overlap cam timing.

Mr Google ..........

Cam “lope” is caused by the overlap when the exhaust valve is opening and the intake valve is closing. The more of an overlap, the longer and lower the sound of the “lope” will be. This is usually a result of a longer exhaust duration.

Yep, all stock except for suspension and oil cooler. The new one will have all that, and higher compression (11.5:1) and a new exhaust to mate up to the LTHs -- haven't decided which one yet, I'd like to get the F.I. one, but it takes too long to make.

Also, the 3.9 final drive will skew the new dyno numbers a bit.

There is one on the forums for sale

Ooh, good catch!

brucelidat 07-25-2016 12:25 AM

so how do the final drive gears skew dyno numbers? I have 4.08s

Your RWHP will read lower with a higher final drive. Of course that's assuming the pulls you are comparing are done in the same gear.

brucelidat 07-25-2016 12:11 PM

I believe my runs were done in 5th because of the gears. Are cars usually run in 4th?

Slartibartfas 07-25-2016 04:44 PM

Runs are usually in the gear that is closest to 1:1.

abm89 07-25-2016 06:08 PM

5th is 1:1 with the 3.69 Final drive (stock 6MT)

Elmo370z 07-25-2016 07:18 PM

I thought 4th is 1:1 (3.69)5th would read higher mumbers.
