Problems overheating after installing some mods

Hello all,

So a couple of months ago I had a few mods installed on my 2012 370z. And while its been great, ive noticed a huge increase in my engine heat. It used to hover around 180's on cooler days, and maybe low 180's on hotter days ( a few lines over the 180 mark), but now its well over that and its hitting 220 on hot days and thats without any aggressive driving.

We have tried purging and burping the system a bit and nothing has changed. I was wondering if anyone had any insight on what I could try next to solve this? I never had heating issues before this.

My mod list:
- MOTORDYNE M370 Intake Manifold
- ShockWave))) 370Z
- Motordyne ART pipes
- Stillen G3 CAI
- 2015 Nismo body kit (used to have 2012)

Let me know if you guys have any advice on what to do

This car runs hot. Mine pegs 220F min pretty much every time I drive it. Best solution is an oil cooler. Dump that garbage stock oil cooler in favor of a 25 row (34 row if you track)

If you have a tune, one of the things you can do is have the fans come on at a lower temperature.

I think you're confusing the coolant temp with oil temp that's displayed on one of the triple gauges. On our cars the oil temp is normal to get high during hot days but 220 is not that much yet. I'd deff invest in a good aftermarket oil cooler because little spirited driving can get the oil temp up there really quick.

I guess why I was concerned is because it never used to get hotter than 180 before mods, and now its at 220. That increase seems abnormal to me. Is there something in the mods that would cause the temps to increase more than when it was stock?

And sorry for the stupid questions, pretty new to all this mod business!

None of your mods should have any impact on oil temps. Are you sure you're not just seeing higher temps because it's summer?

There's a few things you could do. I'll name the top 3:

1) Bigger oil cooler with thermostatic sandwich plate
2) Bigger oil cooler with thermostatic sandwich plate
3) Bigger oil cooler with thermostatic sandwich plate

Once you've completed all 3, get a good tune (unless you already have)

As far as the cause for higher temps? Could be your driving habit. Have you been keeping it in higher revs than normal just to enjoy the sound? When I first got my exhaust custom modified, I had the same issues until I realized that keeping in higher revs (3.5k-4k instead of 2.5k or less), my oil temps SKYROCKETED. Try going for a short drive while maintaining over 4k RPM. You'll see that needle climb

My money is on this one combined with higher ambient temps.

More HP!

Outside temp/humidity really affects the temps. I wouldn't think much about it and just get aftermarket oil cooler. It's one of the first must do mods for our cars. I suggest check out Z1 they have everything you need to run cooler.

I live in texas and this is daily. Even after spirited driving it will hover around 220. Wouldn't worry about it unless you were hitting 240+.

I have a 25 row oil cooler on top of the stock one and in stop and go traffic I will see 210+. It's common on our cars and there is nothing wrong with it. If I hit a long stretch of highway I will stay right at 180.

u sure about that? 180F is my minimum oil temp before i to start to really opening her up.

From back in my racing days, we ran the oil at 240-260 degrees F. This is because hotter oil is less viscous and flows better giving you more power. Quality modern oils don’t start breaking down until 270+ F and quality synthetics can tolerate temps over 300. Also, all the combustion contaminants i.e. water and hydrocarbons that can break down oil will burn off at 220. So your oil should be fine under 270 and you should get it over 220 to burn off contaminants. I am sure there are articles on the web on this subject.
