DIY : Radar display in mirror
Anyone have a DIY for this? Might have to do one myself...
|
|
No.
I will be doing this and updating the thread when done :) |
Found this: 350Z Valentine One Radar HomeLink Mirror Install

Thanks Dreamer

I am not one for taking pics, but I got a few so you can get the general idea.
Getting the mirror housing apart was the hardest part of the install. Using only the finest tools as well :icon17: I found a butterknife had the best prying options without marring the housing too much. http://www.the370z.com/members/plasm...419-195640.jpg After getting it apart it was an easy choice to choose where the display would go, the far right, in the middle of the mirror. Not ideal, but a good, easy place to see none the less. http://www.the370z.com/members/plasm...419-195651.jpg After placing the display on the mirror and checking clearance with the back, I noticed I might have to shave some parts on the back of the housing to make it fit. I checked the brightness of the display and noticed that it was a bit brighter when I took the protective lens off the display itself. I also noticed that it cleared the back of the housing very nicely. http://www.the370z.com/members/plasm...419-205859.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/plasm...419-212357.jpg Next I had to find a way to route the cord. There was a lot of room to run it behind the circuit board, but nowhere aesthetically acceptable. I didn't want to have a hole in the back of the housing where everyone could see. I found a very nice solution... http://www.the370z.com/members/plasm...419-212315.jpg Taking the stem off with a torx bit, I could drill a hole in the side and viola, could easily tie in with the standard control cords through the roof... http://www.the370z.com/members/plasm...419-212330.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/plasm...419-212723.jpg I used an industrial adhesive that I had lying around to attach the display to the mirror. It bonded instantly and was perfect. Just have to be really careful applying it to the parts. I used a toothpick to apply a very thin layer to the housing of the display. I will have pics of the display when I get a proper power source that doesn't require me to use both hands to work. |

Very nice work, repped!

I'll add installing the rest of the Beltronics STi-R shifters and components if enough people are interested.
I am thinking of placing the GPS module in the passenger A-Pillar (reserving drivers side for the awesome Galeforce custom gauge A-pillar :) ) The central unit will probably go behind the dash, along with the speaker and assorted wires. Not sure where I am going to mount the control panel and USB port....might have to go in my little box with my ipod connector from my pioneer HU |
So I have the ZR4 shifters, which have been proven not to work with all laser guns. I bought the kit last year, so not surprised by this. Still installing them anyway.
Finally got my headliner down and going to route the display wire along the top and down the passenger A pillar. I am also routing my HU mic to the stock mic location. Will upload all the pics when I am done.... |
RIP visor hinge covers.... :bowrofl:

Forgot to mention I took out my console and going to route my iPod connector for my HU and the usb update port for the radar detector into the lid. Trying to figure out where I am going to place the control unit and how much length I need for all the wires. I am concerned my display connector isn't going to reach into my dash. Anyone know what I can use for a extension? Would a normal telephone cord work? lol |

While the plug is the same, you need to ensure the telephone cord has all 6 (or maybe 8) wires, I believe the STI-R display uses them all. Standard old school telephone cable had 4 wires/4 pins in use on the modular connector. Check the # of pins on the connector, that's how many wires need to be inside the cable.
Edit just looked at mine, 6 wires. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

:ugh2: uhh anyone know where I can get telephone cords these days? :icon17:
|
Use Cat 5 ethernet cable....
|
Then he'd have to switch the ends out though and the cable is way thicker to route

Hmmm
Don't ethernet cables all have fatter connectors? Do they come with the same size telephone connectors these days? |
Yes Ethernet is fatter that's why I said you'd have to switch the ends ;)

telephone cable is four pin, ethernet is 8
you can put a phone end on an ethernet cable but the wires would have to be spliced together if they are to be used in that case... I'd have to see the application. |
Thanks for all the input guys :D
I was really surprised how easily I gutted the entire inside of our car. The pieces came off easily. The clips held tight, but having proper prying tools really helped. Hopefully will get the radar and front shifters in place tonight and can start cleaning up my wiring. Bringing home some clips and shrink tube from work |
I may have the crimping tool at home.... not 100% sure as we are moving and some stuff is in storage. I'll bring it to the Z Club meet on Thursday night if you're coming...

Yup. Just be sure it's the 6 pin rj12 connector you need. They also use a narrower rj11 connector with 4 wires for the power cable. Both available at the source. And ensure when you align the heads they are dead level and straight to the front not following the car bumper shape. I should be doing some LIDAR testing this summer so I'll keep you posted and you can get your install checked too. Also don't use the same spot I did go up two slots  Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Call me ignorant, but does the mirror just allow the light to pass through without etching?
|
Good news, I had my ZR's go off last night! Bad news, it was from a set of HIDs behind me. I am very interested Ed if you can get some sort of performance out of these.
Mine are completely useless (probably as a result of my install, but it would be nice to confirm). |
I'll take a look at them on Saturday Mitch, just remind me

Will do ed, Its looking like its going to be a wet cold saturday unfortunately. Right now they are calling for a rain/snow mix. Lets hope that changes. Ill probably be bringing the car thursday night as well if I dont end up having to work.

So turns out that the system I have uses a four pin connector, just like a regular old phone line.
Routed my mic and display wires through the headliner, got that back in place and sunvisors back on. JB's didn't have the bulbs I wanted in stock, so have to wait till some more come in. Anyone know the replacement numbers for LED's on the interior and license plate? I am looking to do my map lights, trunk and license. |
|
So I mounted my laser shifters today and went to find a place to mount the radar module and ran into a snag. There really isn't a place to mount it.
I suppose I can get some self tapping screws and mount it to the crash bar. Only place I can really see where it will sit secure... Anyone else have this system? Suggestions on radar module placement? |
From everything I have read on optimum radar performance for the custom installed systems, the radar receiver needs to 'see' the road for best performance. With the crash bar it would be hidden behind the bumper, not ideal. I would mount it on the top row of the fangs, dead centre. It should fit in there nicely.
