The cord from the detector should contain two wires: power and ground. You might have power going to it fine but if the ground wire isn't grounded, it won't work

The cord from the detector should contain two wires: power and ground. You might have power going to it fine but if the ground wire isn't grounded, it won't work of course. That or you've swapped power and ground.
