I did it, but it was an involved project:

I basically drilled out the 2 rivets on each handle, had a friend at a machine shop drill and tap the ends so I could assemble them again. It way easier to paint them and get a good base and clear coat under the handle.

I also have pictures of how to spring goes back on. Kinda tricky but possible!







Also, for people who take the handles off and don't want to drop the screw: take some masking take and roll it into a cylinder sticky side out. Even though i had a magnetic tip screwdriver, it was a nice piece of mine to have the barrier!
