Oil cooler, oil change

I'm getting an oil cooler soon.

after i install it and when i'm ready for an oilchange, how do you drain the oil on the cooler and lines?

i'm getting the stillen 25r cooler with thermostatic plate.

also, how much more oil will it need?

i emailed stillen but they never replied.

You don't change the oil in the cooler

You can mount it upside down and it will drain, BUT you'll also have a hard time telling how much oil you'll have.

I think it's like .75 quarts more?

dP3NGU1N 02-14-2013 04:41 PM

I was able to empty an entire extra quart into my engine after I got my 25row.... Setrab?

Daishi9000 02-14-2013 04:43 PM

so you always leave .75 quarts of dirty oil on your engine?

Daishi9000 02-14-2013 04:45 PM

yes setrab!

ok. so maybe i can add 5 quarts initially, turn on the car for a bit to let the filter and cooler to fill up. then check again and keep adding until it's full?

Yeah, it doesn't matter honestly, and I am too lazy to do the math, but it's less than that because it gets diluted in the new 5 quarts then you drain that

Again, if you dislike that option, mount it upside down

Just add oil to the cooler when you install it
Or if you just installed it, add like 5.6-5.7 quarts, run it, THEN add more if needed

ok, thanks, i'll probably end up just not draining it.

so, on the initial install, the thermostatic plate will be closed. that means i can only put 5 quarts, i'll have to wait until it warms for the oil to enter the cooler. then add more oil.
so pre filling the cooler is a good idea.

doesn't the thermostatic plate open up at 180f?

No, it's always open, it's just not open MUCH, and it's fully open at 180

 ok, thanks.

Yes fill the oil cooler with fresh oil before you even put the lines on it during install. I'm guessing the Stillen instructions are subpar at best but Z1 has install instructions for their kit on their site that should help you out.

FPenvy 02-15-2013 10:24 AM

i am doing the same thing here in the next couple days with a 34 row Z1 oil cooler. i got 2 extra qts laying around that will come in handy.

my question i've been posing to people is i see some go with a longer oil filter. is this needed or better?

cv129 02-15-2013 10:31 AM

Longer filter is not needed, it's just for additional filtration surface.

And I think there's a member that mounted the oil cooler upside down in order to drain oil out, but again not required. I remembered somebody here says that even the vigorous GTR maintenance doesn't call for draining oil from oil cooler.

If dirty oil is a concern, just change oil more often, plus magnetic drain plug and filter mag.

Kn top of that, do oil analysis if you are really concerned about it.

yea i run the magnetic plug, first had a K&N filter and now i have the Nismo one from Z1. probably gonna go with a longer one this time just to see how it goes.

also i doubt i'll mount mine upside down. probably just regular as per the install instructions.
