Oil cooler, oil change
I'm getting an oil cooler soon.
after i install it and when i'm ready for an oilchange, how do you drain the oil on the cooler and lines? i'm getting the stillen 25r cooler with thermostatic plate. also, how much more oil will it need? i emailed stillen but they never replied. |
You don't change the oil in the cooler
You can mount it upside down and it will drain, BUT you'll also have a hard time telling how much oil you'll have. I think it's like .75 quarts more? |
I was able to empty an entire extra quart into my engine after I got my 25row.... Setrab?
|
so you always leave .75 quarts of dirty oil on your engine?
|
yes setrab!
ok. so maybe i can add 5 quarts initially, turn on the car for a bit to let the filter and cooler to fill up. then check again and keep adding until it's full? |

Again, if you dislike that option, mount it upside down |

Or if you just installed it, add like 5.6-5.7 quarts, run it, THEN add more if needed |

so, on the initial install, the thermostatic plate will be closed. that means i can only put 5 quarts, i'll have to wait until it warms for the oil to enter the cooler. then add more oil.
so pre filling the cooler is a good idea. doesn't the thermostatic plate open up at 180f? |

 ok, thanks.

Yes fill the oil cooler with fresh oil before you even put the lines on it during install. I'm guessing the Stillen instructions are subpar at best but Z1 has install instructions for their kit on their site that should help you out.

i am doing the same thing here in the next couple days with a 34 row Z1 oil cooler. i got 2 extra qts laying around that will come in handy.
my question i've been posing to people is i see some go with a longer oil filter. is this needed or better? |
Longer filter is not needed, it's just for additional filtration surface.
And I think there's a member that mounted the oil cooler upside down in order to drain oil out, but again not required. I remembered somebody here says that even the vigorous GTR maintenance doesn't call for draining oil from oil cooler. If dirty oil is a concern, just change oil more often, plus magnetic drain plug and filter mag. Kn top of that, do oil analysis if you are really concerned about it. |

also i doubt i'll mount mine upside down. probably just regular as per the install instructions. |
K&N is a good filter, actually inside is identical to the M1.
I have the longer one, basically it's the GTR size filter, personally i don't think it really does anything especially if you don't run extended OCI (oil change cycle). If you plan to run the oil for, say 8k miles under dusty condition, longer filter may help but I don't have quantitative data to prove that it's needed. |

i use mobil 1 oil and change it every 3.75k miles. once i put the cooler i'll just do an oil change around 3k and keep using the M1 oil filter and not drain the cooler.
i'll get the magnetic plug too. |

mobil 1 is just ok for regular driving.
One time i put royal purple on it, and i changed it about 4.5k miles, then i found out i was a quart short. dumb me did not check the oil thinking it would be fine. i was so wrong. so now i just do oil changes more often, but my engine does not eat that much oil anymore. i was told since the engine was breaking in (below 5k miles) it was eating a bit more oil. now at 35k miles, it doesn't eat that much anymore. in the near future i'll probably try a better oil like motul or redline since i want to do some tracking, i just have to remember to check the oil more often. i think the oil cooler will probably not make the oil last much longer than it does. that's why i get 6 quarts of mobil 1 at costco for 26$ haha. |

Although I'm wondering about shipping charges for the oil. I live in LA, and a couple things I've ordered have had some pretty high shipping lol. |

Is there a difference between the regular mobile one, and there performance gold cap one? As in, does it make much of a difference? |

z1 deals sounds good.
so with the new oil cooler, you'll need more than 5 quarts. i wonder if z1 will sell you a kit with one or two extra quarts. |
i'll check oil prices later, i should go back to work now!! lol..
