Bump, thanks to all who have contributed to this thread a lot of reading but Awesome information, I am installing the fog light today and want it to flash when braking. Where can I get a flasher, Radio Shack, City Mill?

LMBmikeZ 12-26-2010 02:46 PM

I have been reading through lots of DIY but have any of you found a way to wire the stock fog light into the brake lights so it gets brighter when the brakes are applied? I do understand that I would need to change the bulb in it, but has anyone else done this yet?

everyone is doing either EVO-r fog light and or the blinking for reverse, solid when just on. There is also peopel who have gone solid for the on position but then blinking when brakes applied. But I don't want it to blink while braking, I think that would just be asking to get pulled over around here..... but I don't know I should ask if that's illegal because if not I may just go that route!

simota1 12-26-2010 05:06 PM

i believe you would need a dual filament bulb and a plug that would match it and wire the brighter filment to when you hit the brakes it will light up.... did that make sense? :icon14:

thanks for the info and diagrams, it made my install a lot easier. i installed mine as a 4th brake light with parking light feature, no flash. i did use male/female connectors so that if i wanted to add a flasher later it wouldn't be so hard to do.

anyhow, my extra tip... i used the tan 7443 harness end from the original Lexus IS300/Altezza brake light to obtain the low/high intensity (sourced from a junkyard). i had to shave the circumference of the harness down, and took out 2 of the locking prongs. it eventually sat snug and even locked into place within the light.

for wiring, i used the diagram that was previously provided here and of course i skipped over the flasher. hook up as follows:

nissan red wire - lexus green wire
nissan green wire - lexus green/white wire
nissan black wire - lexus white/black wire

as for the bolts, i didn't have any problem removing mine, just a little TLC with the removal. good luck with your installs and thanks again!

here's what i did to achieve that "brighter when brakes applied" look

yep:tiphat: that's exactly what I am thinking! I am just wondering if it has been done yet and tested so I can just do it quick with out coming up with my own solution!

so does the 7443 harness just replace this one that is attached to the fog light!

yes, but remember that you have to hard wire the harness in.

DIY of complete FOG LAMP install

I liked following this thread because it shows technique as well as imagination. Keeping it simple though, would it work as a back-up light?

My 2011 touring came with the red lens but the harness and plug are unconnected. Does anyone know if the box behind the lens is a dummy or does it already include the light itself?

I would prefer a back-up light but I would do the brake light, just for fun, if all the parts are already there.

.calm 01-18-2011 04:49 PM

just wanted to say thanks for this DIY... really helped with the install of my clear tails...

Dembflyr 02-09-2011 02:48 PM

I may have missed it in this thread but...

What bulb would I use for the 7443 dual filament socket if I wanted it to be a tail light and a brake light? What wattage make the fog as bright as the other tail and brake lights?

Thanks.

Colonel 02-13-2011 03:01 PM

So was the lamp already in the light as well, or did you have to buy a lamp to go in?

However, the other end of the wires from the plug I found, is connected to nothing since My car didnt come with the "Fog light switch".

What I did was: plugged in the harness into the fog light. Then took the trunk panels (inside) off so that I could see the frame, which exposed a couple wiring harnesses. The light orange wire is the one that went to the fog light plug, and the green wire (i think, im not remembering very well) went to turn on the taillights when the brake is presssed. So I spliced those wires together, and that was it.

Now my fog light turns on everytime i hit the brakes.

not sure of your question exactly, but i'll try to answer your question otherwise.

the oem fog light comes with a 7440 harness with 7440 bulb which is a single filament. thus, it has the always on look.

you can modify a 7443 harness with 7443 bulb to fit inside of the oem fog light. the 7443 bulb has dual filament that has the low/high intensity for parking/brake features. i'm personally using a wal-mart or sylvania brand of bulb that cost me around $2.

hope that cleared things up for you.

Thanks. I realize now that my question was worded poorly.
I ordered the 7443 socket and I was just making sure that the standard bulb that fits it would look right.
I am wiring it so that the foglight is on with the parking lights and gets brighter with the flip of a switch.
That way it still accents the rear but also works as a fog light.

So will the 7443 bulb socket fit directly into the fog-light housing ?

TongMan 03-02-2011 05:26 PM

Yes. I just inserted a 7443 bulb into the stock fog light housing and it fit perfectly.

TongMan 03-02-2011 06:27 PM

I have the prewire already, but how do I continue after connecting the plug into the prewire to make the light functional?

PontualZ 03-03-2011 12:10 AM

Are you talking about the fog light wiring that came with the car from the factory? That prewire doesn't really work for our US cars, because we don't have the fog-light control on our steering wheel stalk. I have the prewire too, but I haven't found out how to use it yet. I've been reading and following some threads, like this one, and the best bet is to run the harness that the z-store has or wire it into your tail lights depending on your preference.

a 7443 bulb would fit into the 7440 harness without problem. however, you will only have the always on or always off look, and not a parking light.

Even if you had it tapped into the brake light line ?

I would like to make mine just like a brake light.

TongMan 03-03-2011 08:00 PM

So, I guess I may have to abandon my rear fog light install because I can't remove the nuts from the studs holding the dummy fog light.

Go to this thread to learn how others removed the nuts: DIY:REAR Fog Light install with New harness for US spec 370Z + Radar hardwire w/pics

I had the same thing happen. You could try a dremmel and cut the nuts off. Or, if you can get a drill with a 10mm socket up there (I was able to do this even with the Berk muffler in place) and just spin the nut until the plastic melts.

Don't give up!!

What is with the Japanese and loctite?

TongMan 03-03-2011 08:15 PM

I tried the wd40 and heating the nuts and studs but was still unable to remove the nuts. The black plastic piece should not be damaged right?

My install

1 Attachment(s)
Hey all... After purchasing the center console switch kit from the Z store.. I got lazy and decided just to make a simple 4 brake light.. Using the flasher idea I simply wired in a generic turn signal flasher to gimme that sweet F1 car look. With that being said I had to wrap the flasher in foam and a towel. The flasher being in the panels means the clicking sound resonates throughout the car unless you do this.
Notes regarding the pic: the pic show the rear trunk area just pass side of center.
My car was prewired. Find the tan colored wire coming from the fog light..there is 2 nearly identical tan wires in the harness. That tan wire will feed up from the fog light. It needs to be spliced to the light mint green wire(not the darker green wire) there is 2 green wires.. Use the lighter one. Nothin needs to be done with the ground wire. If you want a flasher simply wire it in line between the light green and tan wires. Tape off the tan wire that continues up to the front of the car.

Here is a link to a video of what it looks like at night:
MobileMe Gallery
edit just realized the movie doesnt play.. making this not near as impressive hahah
download the movie to your pc them open it to see it in action.

Also I have a Zstore illuminated fog light switch for sale if anyone interested..Still in the package. PM me...

TongMan 03-06-2011 01:15 AM

Finally got it installed. I hate those two freaking 10mm nuts.

Dembflyr 03-21-2011 04:08 PM

I finished wiring my fog light today and I figured that I'd share how I went about it.

I swapped out the single filament harness with a dual filament. I wanted the fog light to accent the rear when the parking lights are on and also act as a fog light when you flip a switch. I also wanted to have it flash when the brakes are pressed. This had to be done so that the brake would flash no matter what configuration it was in.

Here is how I did it:

http://www.the370z.com/members/dembf...-schematic.jpg

I would like to find a flasher that blinks a little faster. If any one knows of one, please let me know.

trichilo 10-07-2011 11:06 AM

how many bolts hold the tail light in i got new lights for them i get get it out is the a third one some where

trichilo 10-07-2011 11:08 AM

is there three blots that hold the tail lights in bc i only see to of them and i cant get the light out

Orochi 11-30-2011 05:49 AM

Great guide, helped me a lot when I replaced my tail lights!

When I reassembled the panels I noticed this small piece of clear plastic near the rubber moulds but could not work out where it belonged... any ideas?

^ That is a clip that goes under the hatch weather strip.

Fog lamp is great install!

Pelican170 12-06-2011 02:48 PM

This may be a stupid question, but how does the molding you removed in the beginning go back on? does it just push back to where it was?

What molding pieces you talking about? The interior trunk plastic molding?

No, the molding that you have to remove to remove the plastic liners... looks like a rain guard, soft, pliable....

jadeb0x 12-08-2011 09:42 PM

lift up the weather strip and look inside the groove... you should see the imprint of where it once sat, there's usually two in there, so you can see how the other one is situated.

Hello. I just wanna say thanks to simota1 and mr.z as I used a lot of their info to wire in my Jdm fog . I went with a led bulb with a flasher module(makes no noise) set it up as a third tail light flashes for2 seconds when I press the brake then stays on. Looks cool and is maintainable unlike the evor light.

Mandingo 01-20-2012 08:41 PM

Where did you get the flasher module? And how'd you get it to flash for the first 2 seconds?

Thats what I want mine to do

Dembflyr 01-20-2012 08:48 PM

I swapped my cheap flasher for one of these. Blinking Smart Stop - Flashing Brake Light

It works great. Six quick flashes then on solid. If you release the brake and step bac on within eight seconds it doesn't flash again.

brucelidat 01-24-2012 06:12 PM

So what options are there for when the fog light goes on? Does it go on with the brake lights, when you reverse, or both? I would like to have it come on for braking and reverse.

Sorry if this was covered, but that's a long thread to go through.

Thanks!
