KaienZ34 is correct! I am also one of the testers!:happydance:

Side note though will someone please take a pic of te harness for Brian (bdl99) so he can colour code the wires! I would but I don't have my car back until Saturday morning! I guess if it's still not done by then, then I will have to do it!

pwrhsms 05-11-2012 10:49 AM

I'm with Fritz. take the power away from a switch and it can't move. As long as you maintain the continuity on all the signal wires, which we seem to not be messing with, then it shouldn't be able to flag any faults.

When my car gets off the boat I will be testing this out.

I just have to comment positively about this site. Back in the early 80's I was a member of an RX-7 club. Once a month I'd get a newsletter with photos and Q&A's and owners tips, etc. Then, the internet came along and changed everything. Suddenly there are thousands of members from all over the world for just about any user group one can imagine and the collective knowledge is incredible. 370Z owners have an issue that has caused great inconvenience to many, and for those who were out of warranty or decided to take a preemptive strike against the lock failure, spent $500 for a replacement part.
Thanks to the diligent work of some smart and talented members, it looks like we will have a solution to this soon and at a low or no cost depending upon one's comfort level. I just cannot imagine this happening back in the "old days" that some of us more "seasoned" members lived through. Good work guys !:tiphat:

Boy, I remember the days when I would look forward to the 4 page z club newsletter every month. Now with the internet, there isnt even a reason to be in the local club.

Correct, I only got a few connectors to test, but assuming everything goes well I will get more and offer kits more generally. Typically you need to order a large quantity and I didn't wan't to do that without knowing all was well. Luckily the timing was good as I was actually placing a large order so I could just add a few for testing purposes.

Hopefully, I did everything I could and got your beta kit out on Friday. You should have received tracking number and expect you will receive Mon or Tue.

Mike 05-12-2012 12:27 PM

I believe I did. thanks!

jetguy 05-14-2012 04:21 PM

lets see what happens?

jetguy 05-14-2012 04:28 PM

its my understanding that you can get the lock to work one or two more times once it starts to go? i might just carry a small wire cutter in my glove box and wait to see if my lock ever gives me any trouble. if it does hopefully i can use the trick posted on this forum to get it to work one more time, then immediately after unlocking it, just cut the brown wire.

cptspeed 05-14-2012 04:52 PM

I am so nervous about this subject with the upcoming zdayz trip.

Mike 05-14-2012 10:03 PM

got mine today. will hook it up tomorrow. Haven't even opened the box, since I just got home.

If anyone's fails at Zdayz and they can get the steering unlocked, they are more than welcome to mine to get home.

fritz 05-15-2012 04:22 AM

Newbies and others newly interested, or just fitting the harness, may not know it, so I started a new thread on NOT to touch the external screw on the lock.
Curiosity kills the lock.

Is this confirmed to work for sure? I just don't want to do the snip snip unless I know for sure. And are all years prone to this? I have a 09.

You would have to check which lock version you have. The A's and B's for sure are prone to this. One or two C's have had it also i think, the D version is said to be the good one.

Mike 05-15-2012 09:08 AM

I just installed bdl's new harness, cut the brown wire on it, and it works! No more steering lock!!!! :)

And no dummy light?

kenchan 05-15-2012 10:42 AM

:excited:

Mike 05-15-2012 10:55 AM

nope, no dummy light. No difference at all except it doesn't lock now, and while changing brake pads, i don't need it on anymore to move the front wheels.

You just need to remove the harness and plug in the original plug if you need the steering to lock during any services.

Thanks for the update.

AUtigers370z 05-15-2012 11:20 AM

Awesome! When can I get one?

With this plug you don't have to cut anything right?

The current version yes you do cut a wire on the supplied harness piece, but leave the OEM harness alone. For the final production version it hasn't yet been decided whether it will be pre-cut or just not pinned. Got mine as well, going to try it out tonight, very excited :)

KaienZ34 05-15-2012 11:45 AM

Just speaking for myself personally, i'd like a non-pinned version.

so i am assumming this hotwire as i call it (taken from hot-swapping), does not trigger any errors or DTC? it's a little different unplugging several pins vs just cutting the brown wire while the car is ON.

No errors that I can tell. It would be effectively the same if the harness simply had no pin 1 vs cutting it yourself, you simply disconnect the OEM connector with the car in ACC mode and then plug in the adapter.
