i think you can get reimbursed, but not 100% sure. make sure to keep the documents when your car is fixed, i guess. :)

happytheman 02-01-2012 08:06 PM

Yeah, you have to keep your receipts and invoices to prove the work was done. You will then be refunded the cost when there is a recall. That happened to me with my Toyota.

spearfish25 02-01-2012 08:45 PM

If these parts are on restricted order, I'd guess Nissan is clamping down to ensure they can address true failures prior to starting a full recall. Probably trying to stockpile the parts from the supplier.

GaleForce 02-01-2012 09:03 PM

Why would Nissan hold a part back? Money is money right?

kenchan 02-01-2012 09:03 PM

i'd like to see the faces of GTR owners that will probably get yet another round of recall for the same damn thing...bring back the RevC's, we'll install new RevD's. lol..

i think the best one can do at this point is keep a spare if feasible.

i think it has to do with availability of parts. they are on allocation for the immediately needed customers.

Hopefully, we have a bunch of members on this site alone that are waiting for the new part.

Mine just failed and the remedies didn't work so I took the part out and opened it up. I was able to simulate it but, the down fall is my steering wheel will not lock anymore even when its off. Hopefully, I can figure how to get this part to work properly again. If not, I'll just keep driving as it is or buy a new part if it bothers me that much.

that suck. can you post up if you have RevB or RevC?

also if you could let us know how you went about opening the unit and what part of the lock was failing.... was the gear jammed or some relay or something was stuck?, etc. thanks! :D

Thanks! I noticed theres that flashing Red car with the key. Its only there when the car is off..when i turn the car on/driving its gone. Is this something i need to worry about? Or is this a type a theft alarm or something?

kenchan 02-03-2012 05:03 PM

hummm... not sure. i would ck the owner's manual. my car's under the cover so kind of a pita to take a look at the moment. :D

no thats normal. I can't remember what it is exactly... something like telling you car is locked but it's normal

Thanks Bud! I was worried it might run down the battery. Oh well im just happy i got my car back!

On a side note i'm never bringing my car back to that dealership..the service manager called me and told me my remote starter is not working and think its the cause of the car to stop working period (no power locking/unlocking doors) I was confused so I came up there to see and when i saw it...FIRST thing i noticed i didnt see the yellow key light..it was off..i told the manager man the battery is dead thats why you cant start the car" He just had this dumb look on his face. Anyways that was one of the problems I had with them..

kenchan 02-03-2012 05:20 PM

dang, sorry to hear about all the hassle, jasonle. :( sounds extremely frustrating.

Jasonle 02-03-2012 05:24 PM

Man I wonder with all this part problem..it must be hard for people to sell their 09's and 10's? or Let ppl know about this part before buying?

probably not.

im thinking ~99% of people out there dont know about this issue unless they visit the forums and nitpick warranty repair issues, etc. :)

i would never consider selling my Z just for this issue, that's for sure.

when one of my 2 units go bad i will make sure to take it apart to see wat went wrong and fix it. even if it's non-functional as a lock, if i can get it to bypass the BCM i could careless about locking the steering itself. :)

Baer383 02-03-2012 07:27 PM

Well I put the "D" lock in a little while ago very easy I used the security bolts they are easy to remove tap on the edge with a hammer and chisel they come right off,

You were right $400-500 bucks is alot better than having my car sit at a dealer(outside)for a undetermined amount of time and some young inexperienced tech working & dirtying up my car,sh!t getting stolen off my car while it's at the dealer and the very careful tow truck driver Fvcking up my ground effects.

Money,SH!T!!! I can make more but the time and energy I have in my car,

PRICELESS

I wasn't aware of this issue, though I just checked and mine is working fine, no alert, it makes the sound when I hit start to ACC. But I do have the "B" rev. lock.

It sounds like it's close to being a recall, how will people be alerted of this recall if it does happen? I just bought mine and I'm wondering if I'll get something in the mail or not. It'd be great if we could have a sign up list of all "at risk" steering lock people so of and when the recall happens we can call our local dealers and get it taken care of.

a bit presumptuous... nissan hasn't made any indication of considering a recall to date. they seem to be ignoring the problem and reluctantly replacing it if you car is still under warranty.

Yeah... I was responding to a few previous posts indicating Nissan's limiting the sale of the replacement units, and that usually preceding a recall.

A guy can hope, right? I'd just rather not spend $500 that could go toward other more fun parts.

I know what you mean,I spent the $435 on the Steering lock and went out yesterday and bought a GTM Supercharger kit.:roflpuke2:

My experience with Autobarn service has been pretty stellar. Let me know how things go.

Got my car back this past week. Originally they told me the part was on back order and that I wouldn't get my car back until the end of the month, but I'm not complaining.

As for the Autobarn, I would give the service department 9/10. Everyone I spoke with was helpful, polite, and professional. They got the tow truck out to me, the car in the shop, and fixed the issue in a timely manner without any BS that you can get from some dealers.

My only complaint, and why I gave them a 9 and not a 10, is that when I originally spoke with them on the phone to have my car brought in they assured me that they would keep me up to date on the car as it spent it's time at the dealership. They said they would call to let me know when it had gotten there, when they started looking at it, when they found the problem, and when they got it fixed.

I had to call them to find out that it had actually arrived and to find out they had started inspecting it, but after I reminded them that they had promised to keep me up to date they were very apologetic and did a much better job of keeping me in the loop.

It's wasn't a huge deal, but no one wants to be kept in the dark waiting and wondering whether their 40K paper weight has be turned back into a car. My biggest gripe was just that they told me they were going to do something and they weren't doing it.

That aside, they were a great shop to work with and I would definitely recommend them to anyone that needed to get some warranty work done.

kenchan 02-12-2012 11:29 AM

dimer- good to hear you got your car back. btw, did you check which revision they put in the car? i would double check just to be sure. you'll want 48700-JF00D. :)

pokeyl 02-12-2012 12:02 PM

OK after reading most of the thread, what is sent to the ECM to tell the car to start? If it is just a switch on the lock, remove the lock and hotwire the switch, now you don't have to deal with it. If the ECM is looking at the motor for movement, that will be harder to fool the system, but could still be done. Point is to build a bypass and never give Nissan the $500 for something that should be a recall. I know we must have some EE's on this site.

Another idea would be to run 24V to it before your warranty goes out and get it replaced?

sucasa 02-15-2012 04:29 PM

Can a forum please email me where to buy this part online? The 'D' version.
I called Courtesy, sold out. Another online vendor, i supplied my year, VIN, on their
contact form, never heard back. Local dealers in VA said it's special order only..

I have 'C' part, and want to buy the 'D' as insurance policy since I would hate to be stranded or wait wks from the dealer.

Much appreciated.

The "D" lock is on restricted order and will be difficult to get ,I got my "D" lock thru a dealer I know and had to give them alot of information and then get it approved by Nissan before he would order it.

Thank you for response.. Seems like sourcing out this part will be harder than i thought :shakes head:

Seems like collusion on the part of North American Nissan dealers. They know there's a problem, they have held back the inventory of the part. Which ultimately means owners will have no choice to bring their cars via Towed to dealer and shell out to pay for labor + part from the Nissan Dealer.

Thanks

Thanks kenchan and everyone else who participated in this and the other steering lock threads!

I got my 09 in for steering lock replacement just days before the warranty expired. Although the lock did not fail when I took it in for service, with kenchan's DIY in-hand I was able to show the tech what the problem was. He hadn't seen the problem before but understood it after reading the DIY. It took 10 days to get a replacement lock and I checked; it's a "D".

If I hadn't read this DIY and about the tapping technique temporary solution, I'd have been SOL!
