Contemplating on buying the D version also. Only have 14,000 miles on the odometer though.

ZMan8 03-10-2012 02:00 PM

so is D version a sure bet?

So far no problems with the "D" version. It's a pinch louder then the original one though.

Not entirely a sure bet yet. They are probably too new to show the problem, however Nissan was replacing the GTR's steering lock with Rev D for the recall. So they should be good to go.

No recall for the 370z yet.

I fell victim of the steering lock problem, car was towed to the dealer....

Wow, a 2011 huh? So I'm assuming you must have either C or D. Anyway you can check the number on the lock?

symple84 03-10-2012 05:31 PM

I already left the car but I will know more tomm, whats weird is that I was getting my audio installed at a dealer but the steering wheel is locked and non of the key fobs will unlock it.

ZCarMan 03-13-2012 05:47 PM

My D version of the steering lock unit is now installed and working fine. I have retained the original as it was still working as a backup.

Bumping this thread because my "key" light just went on. I parked the car, did not turn the wheel to prevent it from locking, pressed the start button and engine started. I don't wanna lock the wheel because I'm afraid car wont start lol.

Does the light usually come on before the system fails or does it just goes out of the blue?

GaleForce 03-19-2012 07:20 PM

I would be surprised if your lock has failed. No reported cases of 2011's yet, you might be the first. Have you looked under the dash to see what lock revision you have?

It doesn't matter if your wheel is locked or not! Mine wasn't locked when it happened to me. The key warning was on in the dash for 24 hours also and then no start!!

Ron 03-19-2012 08:00 PM

Crap. I'm on a meeting now but as soon as I get out I'll check on what revision I have.

Ron 03-19-2012 08:36 PM

Car started, light is still on. I have rev C.

GaleForce 03-19-2012 08:44 PM

Rev C should be ok. I think Nissan was using Rev C and Rev D for the GTR recall. Everyone else with a failed unit on a Z has had it replaced with Rev D.

Good to hear your car is ok!

Ron 03-19-2012 08:48 PM

The light is still on though :( going to the dealer tomorrow.

GaleForce 03-19-2012 09:26 PM

Keep us posted. Good luck.

Just made the change to Rev D !!!!!

OK, I decided to put my new Rev 'D" in yesterday. I just couldn't stand the propects of getting stuck somewhere any longer.

Getting the original 'security' bolts out was not an issue as previuosly stated. I used a small pair of needle nosed vise grip type plyers. I replaced those with stainless steel 8mmX1.25 cap head bolts that have a allen head (easier to turn in the small space). I added lock washers as they where a little longer than the originals. Everything works as expected. :driving: The Rev D lock seems to be a little quieter when locking and unlocking, but that could be just my imagination.

I have put the old Rev B, which was still functioning, down in the spare tire well along with a proper size allen wrench (just in case).

The feeling of driving with that added level of security under there is very satisfying for sure! :happydance:

Cool deal man, how many miles do you have on the car (old lock) ??

azn370z 03-21-2012 11:26 AM

Can someone list a link to the reversion d so I can buy one? Thanks. I have rev c and it stopped working, luckily my z is in my garage.

JerryB5 03-21-2012 01:55 PM

Rev D

Z (2009) has just over 12K. Just starting to get concerned that it was getting close to what others thought would be the mileage range for failure. I guess others have gone 20K or more with no issues.

I got mine through a local Napa outlet that ordered it from a Reno Nissan Dealer. Paid a little premium for the shipping.

45K here. That said, I'm probably going to pick up a version D soon.

KaienZ34 03-21-2012 02:31 PM

09 7,600 or so, had it since new. I haven't had a problem (knock on wood) but my warranty is up at the end of the month.

Just remember, even if you do get the warranty, and your steering-lock fails, you're still going to have to deal with the hassle of having it towed to the dealer, and then having to wait for the part to come in.

KaienZ34 03-22-2012 08:49 AM

Very true

GaleForce 03-22-2012 11:17 AM

I'm sure buying the part and installing it yourself will be much cheaper than the extended warranty. Especially if the extended warranty has a deductible.

:iagree:

KaienZ34 03-22-2012 01:43 PM

Not sure on the deductible, but the nissan extended warranty is $1,7xx.

flashburn 03-22-2012 05:19 PM

Not worth it. Never buy ANY extended warranties, and in the end you'll make out ahead.

Can you take a pic of the light?

Of course the light is still on. In the owners manual it states, if the light is on, take the car to the dealership immediately for repair. It doesn't say drive the car home, change the batteries and watch the light turn off. They must be thinking of the other key light. Damn service advisors.

Any updates Ron?

The light for the key lock is on the lower left side of the fuel gauge pod. It should turn on (lights up yellow) when you start your car for ~2 seconds then turn off. It has the letters "KEY" above a key symbol. Page 2-8 of the owners manual. On page 2-10 there three paragraphs stating what to expect when that light is on.
