DIY: TWM Short Shifter and Leather Shifter Boot

I recently bought a TWM Short Shifter and TWM leather shifter boot for my Z.

Here is a DIY write-up for installation. Rep's are appreciated if you like the write-up.

Removal of the stock shifter knob. I'm using a strap wrench, you could also use a piece of radiator hose with vice grips. I think Nissan used a whole bottle of glue to secure my factory shifter knob.

Hook up linkage and install 12mm bolt,

http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6225/6...e31339df_b.jpg
IMG_4360 by J M Gale, on Flickr

Now this was the hardest part of the whole install. Reinstalling the rubber dust boot. You need to work around the driveshaft and try to seat this back into a thin metal groove. This took me the longest to do, reminded me of the Demon bolts! My only suggestion, start from the front of the car and try to stretch the back of the boot to fit, hopefully the rest will fall into place,

http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6054/6...47a5c12d_b.jpg
IMG_4361 by J M Gale, on Flickr

Back in the car. Make sure the shifter is in 5th gear and is touching the reverse lock-out plate. Tighten bolts when you are satisfied with the fitment,

I don't have any problems engaging any gears, shifts actually feel less notchy, reverse is no problem either. I don't have any vibrations or rattling either.

Honestly if I had any issues with an aftermarket part I wouldn't spend this much time on a post for it. lol

Thanks for the compliment on the write-up!

Very nice write up Gale. I plan on doin the same short shift set up eventually:tup: I think Im gonna go with the M1 Abrams knob from TWM.

Thanks!

The Abrams is a nice one, I also like the Big Type-R. I normally drive with my hand on the top of the stock shifter knob so if I can't get used to / don't like the Nismo, I'll get one of those two TWM shift knobs.

You'll like it. The nice thing is you don't need to grind/modify any parts on the car like some other short shifters.

It really is that simple. Installation could be done in less than an hour, easy. Like my write-up says, the hardest part is getting the rubber dust cover under the car to fit properly again.

I had fun doing this write-up, I need to do another... maybe a supercharger or turbo...

batman_4 11-25-2011 04:45 PM

Great write up! One question though...i've had some not so great experiences before with SS its that make daily driving a hassle at times. Is this "tolerable"....i don't know if i am making myself clear but my past SS kit was a pain to make some "smooth" shifts.

ZForce 11-25-2011 07:49 PM

Very nice write up. I normally would not tackle a feat like this, but your write up and detailed step by step instructions make it look easy.

Personally I find the shifts more solid, less notchy, if that makes sense. I find the shift feel to be an improvement over stock.

It's one of the easier part installs, the two had parts are getting the stock shift knob off, and getting that rubber dust boot seated again. Everything else is easy peasy.

Excellent write-up, thank you!
The TWM costs about 350,- Euro here in Germany, which equates ca. 455,- US dollar, so it's a no-no because of that.
Hmm, you don't want to send me one as a christmas gift? ;)

Your right, it is pricey. I waited and bought it on sale otherwise it would have been a no-go for me too. Having said that, it is one of the nicer short shifters you can buy for the 370z. Quality is excellent, fit is perfect.

Maybe if I win the lottery I'll buy a short shifter for you. :tiphat: :bowrofl:

Great write-up, I love the pics too! How does it make the 1-2 shift feel less notchy? Also, how much of a reduction would you say the distances are shorter by now? Does putting a short shifter make it more likely for any tranny problems down the road?

1. I'm not sure why the shifts feel less notchy. Maybe because of the new lubrication? I didn't think it would change the notchy feel between shifts but it did on my car.

2. TWM says its a 33% reduction in shift throw. I just know it's noticeable. I didn't measure the stock throw but I can measure the throw now and you can compare to your own stock measurements. It won't be ideal, but will be close.

3. There shouldn't be any change/problems with the tranny. The new short shifter bolts up the the factory linkage under the car just like the factory shifter.

Glad you liked the write-up.

axio 12-22-2011 03:37 PM

Thanks! Now to save money for this... lol

Anyone know if you can get a spare of that plastic component for the shifter? Just so I don't have to worry about having a vice on hand when I do this.

You don't necessarily need to use a vise. You could use a couple of pieces of wood...

When you remove the shifter from the white plastic cup. Please be careful. The fingers on top can break. Don't asked me how I know. To replace it. You have to get the whole shifter ***. Costs about $160.

Ouch! That sucks!

I just gave mine a swift blow with the dead blow hammer and voila, it popped right out.

Tell me about. I was NOT a happy camper for a few hours. Did the same thing you did. Carefully set it on my vise. Aligned it up. Took aim, and hit it with my dead blow. Shifter popped out, no problem. Cleaned everything up. That's when I noticed one of the fingers broken in the white plastic cup.

Just to check up... How are thing going with this? Has anyone had their 370z in at a dealership and they said something about the short shifter?

How is the short shifter performing for you guys?

Rusty 08-02-2012 06:07 PM

I've had my TWM shifter since Feb. now with no problems. I had to take my Nismo back the the dealer once since I installed the shifter. That was for resetting my steering after I installed the headers. Nothing was said about the shifter or the headers. :D

No issues here. Even been to the dealer a couple of times and the techs didn't say a word. My dealership is mod friendly.

leeyeegue 09-19-2012 09:05 AM

Hey, nice write up!!! I'm going to do this tonight! Just wondering what kind of grease did you use? I prob need to stop by on the way home from work to pick some grease up. Thanks!

Rusty 09-19-2012 11:46 AM

White lithium grease. Just be careful when you pop the old shifter out of the white plastic cup. You don't want to break any fingers on it. If you do. You have to buy the whole shifter assembly just to get that white plastic cup.

leeyeegue 09-19-2012 11:52 AM

Thanks for the info! Any tips for removing it?

leeyeegue 09-19-2012 09:26 PM

Got it done! Thanks for the DIY!! Super easy since I replaced the radio before. The shifter feels AMAZING

leeyeegue 09-19-2012 09:31 PM

For those of you who didn't get the twm knob, try Moddiction's weighted knobs. They are $50 vs twms $100, just as good of a quality... (no joke) The are perfect fit for this shifter. The knob sits lower than stock, plus the weight really makes it feel amazing. I have the anvil 2. I have other friends who use it for their STIs, S2Ks and etc.
