Are their little pieces IN the center of the white cup? Maybe I missed that. |
The "fingers" are in the white cup and wrap around the ball on the shifter.
You can barely see them here, http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6040/6...2c116417_z.jpg IMG_4343 by J M Gale, on Flickr |

Thanks for the excellent write up. I'm new to the Z world, coming from a SVT Focus. I had installed a Steeda SS that made a world of difference with that car. After a week of driving the new Z I feel like 1st to 2nd can be really notchy at times...maybe I need to learn the "optimal shift rpm" on this car better or a short shifter such as this could smooth it out. I also will be applying the clutch spring mod soon, which may help as well. Rep'd +1!

Since this got bumped up ill ask a question.
How did you secure the boot to the shifter? I retained the stock shifter and just screwed it down but the top of the boot (the plastic piece) rattles against the shift shaft, I was thinking about just wrapping teflon or electrical tape around it. Just curious what (if anything) you did to keep this from happening. Thanks Mitch |

repped  for having an awesome write up

Great job!

Just finished installing this. Write Up made it really easy. I took my time so it took a couple hours. Hardest parts for me were removing the bolt from the bottom of the linkage and removing the white cup from the stock shifter.
I found that pulling down on the shifter from under the car (ie compress the spring like when reversing) it made it more accessible to get the socket on the bolt head. To remove the white cup I found that adding new grease made it come off easier. Funny enough getting the dust boot back on was the easiest part of this install and took me 30 seconds. The key is starting from the front and using two hands to pull around on both sides. Haven't driven it yet so I cannot comment on that. |
Good job

I used this to install mine last night. It was very helpful. Thanks +1

I think TWM should send me a t-shirt or something :bowrofl: |
I hung around with Z34_nismo and he did his ST shifter. Can't wait till I'm able to get mine.
|
I picked up a TWM short shifter from a fellow forum member this weekend and will be tackling this soon. Seems like just about every question has been asked and answered, so :tiphat: to everyone for that.
However, I was wondering if you guys had to jack up the car to get to the underside of the shifter assembly? Being a big fat a$$, I am concerned whether I can get far enough under the car to reach the linkage without jacking it up :icon17: |

nismo doesn't even use jackstands or jacks. he just lifts the car with one arm.

OEM Shifter Ball Socket Cup |
Great write up, I was really interested in the ease of switching the shifter out. I'm thinking I might just switch out the shifter arm when I get the new shift nob vs trying to fight the stock off from what people say about the amount of glue.

Would it be alright to grease the ring spacer? Im getting the nasty metallic rattle at high rpms coming from the shifter area
|
You mean the white plastic piece referenced in Post #77? It should be greased. I think I used white lithium but can't remember exactly. Search or reference the FSM for confirmation.
