Question regarding the burr on the spacer. Is it necessary to remove and how do you remove it ? Thanks in advance plan to do his over the holiday

I didn't check the fit with the burr there. Typically you don't want burrs on any parts so I filed it off with a round file.

Good luck with your install

sktvietdragon 03-03-2013 10:17 PM

what kind of grease did you used?

GaleForce 03-04-2013 07:59 AM

It was white grease. I bought it with the kit.

Fingers?
Are their little pieces IN the center of the white cup? Maybe I missed that.

GaleForce 03-05-2013 09:42 AM

The "fingers" are in the white cup and wrap around the ball on the shifter.

You can barely see them here,

Your right, it is pricey. I waited and bought it on sale otherwise it would have been a no-go for me too. Having said that, it is one of the nicer short shifters you can buy for the 370z. Quality is excellent, fit is perfect.

Maybe if I win the lottery I'll buy a short shifter for you. :tiphat: :bowrofl:

Where did you happen to get this on sale?

Watch their Facebook, or sign up for their emails. They have an Easter sale right now and usually have a sale for almost every holiday.

Thanks for the excellent write up. I'm new to the Z world, coming from a SVT Focus. I had installed a Steeda SS that made a world of difference with that car. After a week of driving the new Z I feel like 1st to 2nd can be really notchy at times...maybe I need to learn the "optimal shift rpm" on this car better or a short shifter such as this could smooth it out. I also will be applying the clutch spring mod soon, which may help as well. Rep'd +1!

Mitco39 04-12-2013 04:59 PM

Since this got bumped up ill ask a question.

How did you secure the boot to the shifter? I retained the stock shifter and just screwed it down but the top of the boot (the plastic piece) rattles against the shift shaft, I was thinking about just wrapping teflon or electrical tape around it. Just curious what (if anything) you did to keep this from happening.

Thanks

Mitch

The Z transmission is naturally notchy and the SS doesn't change that, it doesn't make it worse either.

I have the TWM shifter boot. It has less material than the stock one and also doesn't have the plastic ring. Having said that, I use a rubber O-ring to help hold the boot up. I have seen other guys cut the end off a pop bottle. I have seen pictures but can't remember what thread. Mr.Kenchan might know, I think he did that.

I have the boot as well. It just rattles like crazy underneath the stock shift knob. Just curious what if anything you did to yours. Ill pull it off here when I get some time.

The TWM has a plastic ring? Hmm... I have to have a look at mine again. I do know that mine doesn't rattle but I didn't drive with the stock shifter knob. Try the O-ring idea?

Mitco39 04-13-2013 10:35 AM

Yup I will do that, I am pretty sure it has a ring? Could be wrong though. Its on the list of things to do. Thanks!

You're right. I just went back through my pictures and see the TWM has a white plastic ring. Weird that I don't have the rattle. Possibly because of the rubber o-ring I added. I'm sure it'll rattle now that I said it doesn't. :icon14:

simota1 04-17-2013 06:46 AM

repped  for having an awesome write up

Dzel 04-26-2013 03:04 PM

Great job!

N0SL3N 05-02-2013 12:29 PM

Just finished installing this. Write Up made it really easy. I took my time so it took a couple hours. Hardest parts for me were removing the bolt from the bottom of the linkage and removing the white cup from the stock shifter.

I found that pulling down on the shifter from under the car (ie compress the spring like when reversing) it made it more accessible to get the socket on the bolt head.

To remove the white cup I found that adding new grease made it come off easier.

Funny enough getting the dust boot back on was the easiest part of this install and took me 30 seconds. The key is starting from the front and using two hands to pull around on both sides.

Haven't driven it yet so I cannot comment on that.

GaleForce 05-02-2013 04:23 PM

Good job

I think TWM should send me a t-shirt or something :bowrofl:

Dzel 06-05-2013 07:21 AM

I hung around with Z34_nismo and he did his ST shifter. Can't wait till I'm able to get mine.

JARblue 08-13-2013 08:04 AM

I picked up a TWM short shifter from a fellow forum member this weekend and will be tackling this soon. Seems like just about every question has been asked and answered, so :tiphat: to everyone for that.

However, I was wondering if you guys had to jack up the car to get to the underside of the shifter assembly? Being a big fat a$$, I am concerned whether I can get far enough under the car to reach the linkage without jacking it up :icon17:

No chance, unless you're a 99lb girl, you are not going to fit. It's best to jack the car up on jack stands or a hoist.

kenchan 08-13-2013 08:48 AM

nismo doesn't even use jackstands or jacks. he just lifts the car with one arm.

can anyone confirm if that plastic cup is exactly this cup Z1 motorsports is selling? because the plastic cup on z1 site doesnt look like it has the fingers on top like the pics posted on the diy guide here...

Great write up, I was really interested in the ease of switching the shifter out. I'm thinking I might just switch out the shifter arm when I get the new shift nob vs trying to fight the stock off from what people say about the amount of glue.

s2krazyyy 06-29-2016 01:57 AM

Would it be alright to grease the ring spacer? Im getting the nasty metallic rattle at high rpms coming from the shifter area

JARblue 06-29-2016 06:39 AM

You mean the white plastic piece referenced in Post #77? It should be greased. I think I used white lithium but can't remember exactly. Search or reference the FSM for confirmation.
