Hello, Im new to the forum as well as a new Z owner. It seems as though the G3s are the way to go. Before i order them i wanted to ask you the purpose of the ducts that you cut with the dremel. What purpose do they serve? Is there any disadvantage to removing and cutting that plastic?

Thanks in advance, Austin

NFSZ86 11-01-2011 10:08 AM

I had the same ? Hope this helps you have to cut them in order for the tubes to go in, and in order to take those out you have to do twice as work. It wasn't hard to cut them and here you have all you need as instructions.

eddiehemi 11-02-2011 12:42 PM

Yes, taking them out would be a big pain. In addition, you will need those inserts to support the intake and keep it from rattling around. It is really easy to modify them.

Zrider79 12-19-2011 03:25 PM

in the photo above step 7, there is a protruding stud that comes in contact with driver side filter. We cut this stud off, what are you guys doing with it.

Zrider79 12-19-2011 03:29 PM

ok i see, some of you have cut this non purpose stud, sorry saw a note on the other diy.

alejo 12-19-2011 06:16 PM

I did this install over the weekend. We just cut it off with

TerribleONE 12-27-2011 03:45 PM

Nice write up... I cut my stud off as well. Thanks AK as I didn't have to refer to the instructions at all!

tonybui 12-28-2011 04:15 PM

So, I will HAVE to cut the opening for the tubes to slide through ... ?

TerribleONE 12-28-2011 05:37 PM

yes there is no way around this... Honestly cutting it isn't that bad just take your time and remember its not visable!

CC_370z 02-23-2012 08:14 PM

Doing this soon.

..

Just wanted to thank those who posted instructions/pics of this install. Made it pretty easy.
1. The pieces you cut are plastic but too thick for a knife...a dremel worked fine.
2. The stud people are talking about cutting, I just glued a vacuum cap over them.
3. After install, the windows wouldn't work correctly but someone here posted (looks like the info was from the owners manual) the process to reprogram the windows (which REALLY helped when the rain started to come down...)
on an off point, I had the CEL for about 200-300 miles. I had several suggestions about why but was getting uprev AFTER G3 so I wasn't too concerned......just prior to G3, I put the Z thru 1 hard launch and the CEL extinguished itself. (checked dash lights to be sure buld didn't burn out)
comments...F.I. tdx really woke the car up, G3s noticably smoothed out the power across the spectrum. Can't wait for uprev and a day at the track (b4 the heat gets here)
TKS again everyone. Its hard to make myself work on a pricey daily driver but everything went smoothly. (there WAS a bit of hesitation pulling the fascia off tho...lol)

I was wondering the same thing. I cut it off too. It was cutting the filter. Used my Roto Zip and zipped it off. That tool works well for the air ducts too!

Thanks AK for the amazing write-up!

Puma0183 03-17-2012 06:56 PM

Thanks AK i just finished intalling my intake and it was easier than i expected. The scariest thing was taking the bumper off but everything worked out.
For anyone that is thinking aboout doing it, with this directions there is no problem.

Thanks again AK!

Coon-azz 04-05-2012 12:22 PM

To be honest, they look cool and probably add a great deep sound, but I've yet to see anyone identify if there is any real RWHP gain from this install. So far, all I've read is that it moves the power up (possibly) in the power band which means you lose low end torque-which is what you want when racing, not high end unless you plan to run at high speeds.....Anyone have some realy before and after Dyno numbers to show?

DufDaddy 04-08-2012 02:24 PM

:icon17:Just got the install done! There was a moment of terror after I got the battery attached and hit the button to start her back up.....nothing....try again....nothing....I nearly threw up. Then I saw NO KEY flash on t he gas display...SHEEEEEWWWW!!!!

Awesome DIY! I installed my G3's today with this DIY and the installation sheet Stillen provided. I didn't need to remove the strut bar, but those damn silver clips were a pain so I removed those hoses using your instructions. Waaay easier to deal with. Thanks again!

Oh and yeah, they sound awesome :P

urdeliveryguy 05-04-2012 05:57 PM

thanks for the tips AK. helped out alot

http://www.the370z.com/members/urdel...z1-silicon.jpg

also to enlarge the holes i used one of these bits for my dremel cause i couldn't get the cutter in there properly. it worked way to easily and made a really really nice hole. i recomend it. http://www-1.woodworktools.co.uk/dre...-00104002S.jpg

LakeShow 05-04-2012 06:59 PM

Very nice! You feel any power gains?

urdeliveryguy 05-04-2012 11:48 PM

feels like it's running alil smoother to me, my butt tells me nothing. but i noticed alil sound difference right away. its got a sweet hum now. i can't wait to get a cbe now. was worth the hassle to install i love it.

side note i htink i have to take the bumper off again and enlarge the holes alil. we'll see.....

If you don't have a spare piece of hose laying around?

Head to over to a nearest auto parts store and buy a small piece and slice it down the middle and wrap the AC line.

It should look like this

It looks like in your picture that you only cut one side of the intake hole to make it bigger. Before i go all Chainsaw Massacre on my car I wanted to make sure I had this down.
A couple of questions:
-Would cutting the hole on the bigger side be better (lots of room for the intake), or do you want this hole to be a snug fit? (I think I saw that if it was tight you would get noise?)
-Is it best to just cut on the inside of the intake hole as you did in the pic, or should I trim both sides?

Thanks for your help,
M

Well I finished the install this weekend. I had a few little hiccups with the clamps, and after looking at the pictures of other installs, I may have put them in the opposite spots. It is done now though and I don't plan on re-doing it any time soon. All together went well thanks to this amazing DIY. I couldn't/wouldn't have had the guts to do it without all the advice. Thank you AK370z, and everyone else who had some tips!

Problem or Normal???

Hey I installed my gen 3 intakes today, and when i turn the car off after its been running, i hear a weird sounding noise.."click-click..click-click"only does that sound one time but it does it everytime i shut the car off. Sounds like the throttle body thinks it is getting too much air so its trying to release some pressure after the car shuts off. i dont know if the ECU hasnt reset yet or what the problem is but it doesnt really sound normal. has anyone else had this problem or know what the deal is?thanks if you can help!

flashgordon 06-12-2012 02:40 PM

....post my experience!

Because there are two DIY about Gen3, I post the link:

@Burriss03: Check the left and right screws of the bracket and the A/C Line, look in my post to see where!

Juice14 07-02-2012 07:42 AM

I believe they are for fastening the rubber hose on your AC Line. I ended up using double sided tape and finishing with a zip tie on either side of the hose for extra hold.

bacardisk3 07-20-2012 11:47 AM

installed mine yesterday...was easy...pics look a lot harder than it really is..car sounds great..and can def feel an improvement..wish i knew how to post pics lol

The gains are good, definitely pulls harder, have been watching the AFR with torque, the computers in these cars are amazing.

There is a big summer car show here in town tonight, drove around some, seemed like the computer was learning the new intake, acceleration got better the longer I drove (about 20-30 miles), the test pipes are really breathing now!

Lots of fun.

DavidB123 09-09-2012 04:14 PM

I don't mean for this to be a stupid question so I appoligize in advance. Do you disconnect the battery for safety reasons or is there another reason?

LinPark 09-09-2012 05:48 PM

Most OCD folks disconnect it whenever they work on their car - it's the safe thing to do for sure but isn't 100% necessary everytime if you know what you are doing. I left mine connected while I installed the spacers on the rims. :)

370ZGeezer 11-05-2012 04:22 PM

Only question i have is.... Do you have to remove front bumper each time you want to clean/replace filters?
