Default DIY: Rear Fog Light - Flashing Reverse - Solid Brake - Full Override

This DIY will get you started with some custom light effects for your rear fog light. It will flash when in reverse. It will light solid with the brakes (unless in reverse), and you will also have the ability to completely turn it off or completely turn it on. First off are a few thanks and credits. Simota1 with the original Fog Lamp Install. M.J. with the rocker switch source. And AK370 with the Fog Light with Harness Install.

So here are the parts that you need. You'll need two of the sockets and two of the relays. For the rocker switch you want the one labeled Full Size Rocker Switches - 1/4'' Tabs. Get the ON-OFF-ON SPDT version so you have two separate on positions. These are just samples, you can pick your own brand if you want. And you can replace the flasher shown with an adjustable one for a faster flash.

Rocker Switches

Now here is how the pins on the relay are numbered:

The following is what you need to wire up and what pin to wire it to.

Relay 1 30 ----> 12V Switch 1
Relay 1 86 ----> Ground
Relay 1 85 ----> Reverse (orange taillight harness wire)
Relay 1 87 ----> Flasher In
Relay 1 87a ----> Relay 2 30

Relay 2 30 ----> Relay 1 87a
Relay 2 86 ----> Ground
Relay 2 85 ----> Brake (green taillight harness wire)
Relay 2 87 ----> Fog Light +12V
Relay 2 87a ----> Not Used

Flasher In ----> Relay 1 87
Flasher Out ----> Fog Light +12V

12V Switch 1 ----> Relay 1 30
12V Switch 2 ----> Fog Light +12V

This is much easier than it seems as listed here. When these parts are sitting in front of you they are labeled by pin number and all and it is very easy to see how to wire them together. As soon as my rocker switch comes in I will post a video of the operation. Good luck.

Finally updating this post with a video. There are three switch positions you can select from and if you wire everything like I listed this will be the final result:

CBRich, what parts would I need if I just want this to go to a on/off switch and that is it?
Relay, wire, etc.? How long/much wire?

Thanks.

You can tap the yellow wire connected to the cigarette lighter in the center console. To that connect a fused wire going to a standard on-off switch available pretty much anywhere. Then run a wire from that switch (probably 20 ft is good) to the red wire of the rear fog light. And then the black wire of the rear fog would go to ground. If you yank up the rear center trim panel there is one that's very easy to get to. That would give you a simple on off when the car is running.

Excellent, will bug my friend who does my electrical about this and try to get it working. Thanks again, just did not think I needed to drop a lot of money on that pre-made setup.

Will a relay be needed for this setup?

Not for a simple on-off it won't. Just the fog light, some wire, and a fused connector.

It wouldn't hurt to use heatshrink on the connections and get some decent spade connectors for the switch and ground though. All of this stuff is available at your local auto parts store except the switch. M.J. found the perfect switches for the 370 and those are linked above.

I got the switches already, I was betting on that pre-made kit to be a good price but that ended up being wrong. So now I am trying to find out how to piece a kit together, and it seems to be easier than I thought.

CBRich... what would I need if I only wanted position #3 from your video. I don't care about having the ability to always have it on/off.

Here are the behaviors I want.
Fog Light Turns on when hitting the breaks
Fog Light Blinks when reversing

Also has anyone run into any issues after doing this mod (i.e. dead battery because you left your fog light on in an drunken stupor?)

You would just run accessory 12V from your cig lighter to Relay 1 30. Everything else would stay the same. This would only work with the car on so no battery draining could happen.

I get it now. I was trying to avoid running that wire from the cig lighter to the back. If I have to run that wire anyway, then I might as well install the rocker switch as well. AK has a switch that lights up, do you know where I can find one of those that also supports ON-OFF-ON SPDT?

Also, where did you end up mounting the flasher bracket? As far as I could tell none of the other threads talked about that.

I used a plastic project enclosure from Radio Shack. Also there may be acc power out back somewhere. I was going with a switch anyway so I didn't look. Should be easy to find with a multi meter.

How would you adapt this to the rear 3rd brake light of the 07/08 Nismo? I found the power and signal. I'm assuming just the flasher and a switch is needed? Thanks

Sorry for the bum
