Default Rust problem with open ended lug nuts

Might be a dumb question.. and obviously the answer is to not use open ended lugs but.....

Any suggestions on how to keep the ends of the wheel studs from rusting after rain/car wash? I've got the Project Kics R40 open ended lugs and no matter how well I blow dry or soak up water in the lug nut openings I always seem to get a little bit of rust that shows up on the inside of the lugs from the wheel studs.

There's not much you can do about it sadly... I had the same problem with those lugs, and had to swap to closed ended lugs.

Spray wd40 all over the threads and wipe off excess. It might work.

Anything that will keep moisture out. Clear paint works well.

WD-40 (or similar) works well but attracts dirt and will wash off so requires a new dose every now and then. And I don't like the idea of putting oil on wheel lugs (shouldn't make any difference if everything is tightened properly but it still makes me uneasy).

I'm sure other members will come up with more solutions.
