When Are You Putting Your Car Away For Winter?
 

My fellow Canadians.. winter is almost upon us once more!

Just curious.. when are you putting your car away for the winter (the peeps that do)?

I was originally going to wait until the last possible day (at first forecast for snow) but with the rather chilly road temps lately I've merely been running 10's, instead of my usual 9's. :icon18:

I think I'm just going to do a final wash and wax and store it in the garage.. at the end of the month. :icon08:

By November.. the sexy exquisite blue flash of my Z will be absent from the streets for 5 months. Damn our winter for lasting almost half the year! Then the other half.. construction everywhere! :shakes head:

Gonna drive it all over the place the next couple weeks :icon17:

im gonna drive till the last possible second. once theres snow or the temp hits 1-2 degrees. ugh i hate winter ... back to driving the crv...

My Z rolls into the garage for winter hibernation October 27. Then the fun really begins!

1st November - insurance policy renewal date. Put away with fire & theft only.

Nov 1. Just like IDZRVIT, that's policy renewal date so it's convenient.

I normally do the end of the month to for easy insurance switch. However this year due to out of town work for past while (approx 2 months and only home for a week of each month) I am never around to drive it so.........I put it away today:shakes head: but lately the temps have been getting cold yuk! People should also note the OEM tires state that they have bad traction with temps under 10*C and let me tell you since my rears are prett bald I can concur with that statement! Sliding all around.

My decision was always weather dependant. The latest I ever drove the Z was first week of November. BTW, we've already had snow here. But it's gone and the streets are very good. If I still had a sports car, I'd still be driving it.

I just call it cold weather testing. Yeeeeehaaaaaaaaw!

The stock tires are horrific in the cold.

You don't need to tell me! The car is a bloody drift machine in this weather. :driving:

Top down today, still nice here but will be plating the winter beast this week and give the z it's final oil change just to be ready. Last year I drove to end of November with no snow but not going to test that again prob putting her away in a week or 2

Oh btw not to side track the topic but if anyone doesn't know our XM radio has a seasonal package that like $80 and give you one year coverage. Just let them know you store the car for "x" amount of months and they can switch you easy. Dont quote me on the $80 but it's real close. I originally got billed like $150 for the yeaR then I got refunded 50-60 dollars when I spoke to them. I can pull up my old statements and get the bang on amount if people are curious.

Thanks for the info. I don't bother subscribing to XM because it is a summer car for me. Didn't see the value. I'll check this option out next summer.

The only time I really use Sirius is on road trips and cant stand repetitive music over and over. But that is good to know!

How are you handling the winter storage in terms of Battery conservation, flat spots etc?

I will probably be that guy that will take out the car on a nice warm sunny dry day for a spin every now and again. That should take care of flat spots and battery issues.

putting it away? pfff snow plough front mount and good to go for winter. Unfortunately i will be driving mine this winter as well. hopefully for the last time. It is pretty fun in the snow i gota say. You can go 20km/h but be almost completely sideways around corners. It allows you to experiment with controlling a rear wheel drive car in absurd situations.

It'll be in hibernation just before the first snow falls or they drop salt on the roads. Had it out a few times in below 10C temperatures and the engine loves those cooler temps. So far so good in NS. No snow at all yet and the roads did not require salting yet. Lots or rain lately but a nice 17C today. :driving: I'm coming from a motorcycle background so I'm used to storing vehicles and waiting until Spring. It's going to be tough looking at it in the garage all winter but no way in hell I want to drive it in all that salty, slushy, slurry mixture. It's strictly a fair weather toy.

I keep a battery tender junior hooked up to the battery to maintain a float/storage charge. I don't worry about flat spots, I've stored cars much heavier then the z over winter and the flat spots disappear after the first day of driving in the spring.

i put mine away end of month and beeing lowered qite a bit i unfortunately cant take her for a spin on nice sunny winter days cuz we get so much snow in winnipeg and there is no clearence :/
i take battery out and store it inside the house and for flat spots i just roll the car back and forth every couple weeks lol( pretty long garage)

Same this will be the 3rd winter in storing the car, just get a battery tender/buddy and I never had any issues with flat spots. I do also park it inside and covered.

For the battery all you need to do is disconnect it. It will be fine if your only storing it for the winter.

The same can be said for flat spots with today's tires you don't have to worry about flat spots when the car is sitting for 5-6 months. If it wa long term then I would understand the concern but 5-6 months is not really that long.

I have stored my Z every year so far (this being #3 as well) and can say I've had no issues with it come the spring. I can say the same about my old z (z32) I never had a problem and stored that car 3 times while I owned it before getting my 370.

But if you disconnect your battery you have to redo all your settings and if I'm not mistaken on roadsters you have to reprogram your window drop on opening the door. I went with a battery buddy and haven't had to reprogram anything

Beautiful day for driving a sports car today! Temps are right around zero and it's sunny with the winds blowing leaves around. Nice dry roads. I saw a replica General Lee when my wife and I were at Timmies this morning.

Won't get many more like today.

Yes it is same for a coupe but honestly it's not a big deal. All you have to do is hold down each window switch to reset that option, it's not hard at all. Only other thing to reset is the clock on the center gauge cluster. Eveything else stays!

My Gauge clock and my nav clock never match either way lol

That irked me so I turned off the clock on the Navi, lol.

Threw the winter wheels on it today and changed the oil. The winter wheels are for storing the car, not driving it! lol

sigh.... how long till spring?

Just picked up my set of snow tires (Blizzak LM60's), so around early December (temps depending) I'll swap out. Former member really hooked me up. Thanks so much. :tup::tup:

What do you mean? You had intentions to drive it at one point?

That's one of many perks living in Vancouver. Mild winters. Which means I can drive the Z all year round.

Even though I am not in Canada, I still have to put the car away in a few weeks. In Cleveland on the south shore of Lake Erie, we get lake effect snow which can put down a foot of snow before you are done shoveling. I imagine that within the next few weeks, the Z will be put in hibernation like last year. The cover and battery tender will keep the old girl warm until next spring. Geez, I hate this time of year. This week, however, it will still be in the 70's so :driving::driving:!

Oh yeah! I had the car prepped for the wife to winter drive when we bought it...

Do they not salt the roads in Vancouver? :ugh2: if there's salt then I wouldn't want to be driving my car, it just rots them all to sh!t if there's salty roads
