Practice is perfect. From a stop, it sounds like you are doing the right thing.
In traffic, I give myself at least a car lengths distance from the car ahead of me. I'm either in 1st or 2nd and can roll along with the traffic. This is through heavy traffic on 101 or 880 mind you.
Yes, sometimes you have to put it in neutral and stop but just give yourself some room. Who cares if people go ahead of you.

I pretend i'm a truck in heavy traffic. I keep a good following distance. This probably pisses off those behind me, but oh well. I can putt along in 1st/2nd gear as necessary without having to come to complete stops. In complete standstill, i choose a different way, leave earlier/later, do whatever it takes not to be creeping up a few feet every few seconds. For such situations, an automatic is best

Clutch helper spring will surely improve the feedback in the clutch pedal!
