What are you thinking...?

This morning's weather: minus 25 degress with a wind chill of minus 35 degrees..... over a foot of snow.... and I see a 370 and a 350 struggling to manuver through the streets.
People, what are you thinking? Those poor cars!

Philipp 12-07-2009 09:47 AM

My is going to "sleep" in the garage for the next 4 months... Do not want to see my Z in salty snow!

Me too. Mine's parked until early April.

m4a1mustang 12-07-2009 09:50 AM

I took mine out yesterday after the roads sort of cleared up. I don't care if it's snowing... if I can get traction I'm driving.

shumby 12-07-2009 09:50 AM

i drive my G in that all the time. Keep it washed after a day out on the roads and there are no issues.

6MT 12-07-2009 10:10 AM

But I bet-cha don't get the minus 30 degree temps like we do...

Snakes709 12-07-2009 01:20 PM

actualy it was -28 (going by what my 370z said)...lol. I been driving in this snow the last few days and never had a issue. I'm purposly power sliding around corners when traffic is low...other then that, no issues. Although i find it more dangerous to drive with the VDC on...damn thing kicks in and causes the car to react in a way im expecting it to react.

Knux 12-08-2009 11:19 AM

HEY!!
I'm glad to hear that some are ALSO keepin their Z trashin in the snow.
OK.
The big winter debate!
I am totally Pro-370 for winter. (But I understand why most of them are hibernating)

Winter Tires are a must!
and...

Winter Tires are a must!

Because your looking at 18-19s it's gonna hurt but again, it's a must.

I don't know if it'll actually do anything but I bought into some type of anti corrosion coating under my car. I hate salt.

I guess this winter/summer will test if the stupid nitro in the tires will actually keep them from retracting/expanding.

Someone already said something about washing his/her G after a tough day "at work". I wholehearted agree. This might mean getting your car washed every fcukin day there's snow (also freakin salt) on the ground.
Thank God for Esso points - Do not use Petro Canada to wash your car, it's not touchless.

I keep a bag of sand a blowdryer a flare and some beef jerky in that little space behind the drivers seat.

You don't always have to wear boots, gloves, face mask, and head gear but it should always be somewhere tucked away in the car.

I know we all have a pretty new car but check all your fluids once, and keep checkin the windsheid washer every couple weeks.

Those of you that have taken out your spare tire for a bigger subwoofer or somewhat - put it back in.

Make sure you have a fully charged cell phone everyday.

Indeed, tires are a most. We had a freak snow fall here in edmonton couple weeks ago. I had a hard time getting out of my parking lot, then got stock at the base gym, couldnt get traction on the road at all. Now since i couldnt find any steelies that fit our cars. I bought new winter tires Dunlop Snow/Ice Tire, cost me $1500 but worth it. Although i find until i get cruising that the VDC is dangerous as **** to use. I'll either be accelerating at a decent pase or coming around a turn at a decent speed and the thing will kick in and it will cause me to either start a small fish tail or just go ape ****.

I keep forgetting to buy a extention cord so i havent plugged the block heater in and with this -30*C weather it takes awhile for the car to heat up. Plus the clutch and shifter are stiff as ****.

m4a1mustang 12-08-2009 01:30 PM

For driving in fresh snow I am just borrowing a car from my parents this winter, but next winter I am planning on mounting a dedicated set of winter wheels and tires.

This assumes I haven't purchased an SUV by then.

Your car has a block heater?
was it an option you paid for?

Mine has one. Factory unit, cost included in my price. I really didn't want one and I'm going to be removing it.

mine just came with no, no extra cash. Can someone tell me the full details what these do anyways..lol. I heard a small part of what it does but i never had one on any other car so i didnt know much about it. At first i though it was just for the battery.

A block heater? It, um, heats the block. :tiphat:

thank you smart ***..lol. I know that much, but does it keep both coolant and oil warm? Does it help your heater to warm up the passenger compartment faster? Like i said, my old car never had it so i never know of it.

Pharmacist 12-08-2009 10:23 PM

does anyone know how to keep the doors from sticking to the moulding or the windows from freezing shut when the car is parked in the cold outside?

Snakes709 12-09-2009 12:10 AM

go to canadian tire and buy some Silicone Lube and spray it on and wipe the run off, off. That will stop it from sticking

FricFrac 12-09-2009 01:01 AM

Yea it's gotten all the way down to zero here so the Z is in the garage while they sprinkle salt on the road. I don't need to drive it so I'm holding out till it gets up above zero and we get a good rain to flush all the salt off the roads....

IDZRVIT 12-09-2009 08:57 AM

Where exactly under the hood is the plug end for the block heater?

SmoothZ 12-09-2009 09:04 AM

I guess some people don't have a choice but to drive their only car (a Z) all year round. In that case, they should invest in good snow tires and a towing service. :)

Sorry I could not resist. :icon17: Let's just say it keeps the coolant and oil warm(er). Don't expect a bunch of difference in the passenger compartment. But the heater will be pumping hot air a wee bit sooner. I still foresee freezing of some ***. You have heated seats? :ugh2:

This is quite frankly the first I've heard of a non-diesel with a block heater. But Ima from a more temperate zone.

shumby 12-09-2009 10:12 AM

lol we all got block heaters on our cars up here in the great white north. The factory ones only heat the oil not the coolant. Only see that done on the big desel trucks.

Uhh... NO. Block heaters for light duty cars and trucks in Canada (and the USA for that matter) sit in coolant. Not oil.

YamahaR6 12-09-2009 12:20 PM

I am missing something? Where is the block heater located?

Thanks in advance

Up in our great white north, we have something called heated garages.

the plug runs down the right side of the engine compartment and is attached by the plug cover to the grill of the front bumper by the left fang.

How do you access to the block heater plug? Do you have to take off the driver side grill cover? And how to take that cover off?

Pictures would be Great!

Thanks in advance

YamahaR6 12-09-2009 07:52 PM

Found it. For those who are interested. Driver side, behind the intake box.

Snakes709 12-09-2009 08:42 PM

the block heater has a long cord with a 3 prong plug at the end that sticks out from the grill from the bumper. You dont have to take anything off, just plug in a extention cord to the plug and then plug it in a socket. In the picture below you can barely see the plug, its attached to one of the blades of the grill

YamahaR6 12-09-2009 09:18 PM

Somehow mine is right behind the driver side intake.

I guess I could run it down to the bumper grill.

Snakes709 12-09-2009 10:51 PM

well i ran mine on the driver intake as well....looked ugly sticking out the bumper.

IDZRVIT 12-10-2009 10:04 AM

Thanks lads!

Pharmacist 12-11-2009 08:03 PM

just found mine today. had no idea it even comes with one! is this something that comes from japan or is it installed by the dealer as aftermarket? neither the nissan website, nor the owner's manual mention anything about a block heater.

i think its installed on all new cars but im not sure.

sinceday1 12-12-2009 08:20 AM

I think it's blockheaters are installed on all Zs destined to Canada. I remember reading somewhere blockheaters in Canadian Zs were a standard equipment. :hello:

I saw a Ferrari roadster on the news spinning it's wheels in the snow Toronto had the other day. The guy must really love driving his car.
