Sad, but true...

I must report that because of the almost record early snowfall in and around the Edmonton area, that the 370 is now officially parked for the winter. Sad but true. Stupid weather!:shakes head: At my location west of Edmonton, we have had 6 inches of snow and about 4 inches has remained on the ground.

So..... I'll see the roads again in mid March to early April.

nogoodname 10-15-2009 09:48 AM

good set of winter tires is worth it....... most of the time the roads are cleared over here.... so the G plays in the snow

TX_370 10-15-2009 09:50 AM

Whats snow?

It's the powdery version of that clear cold thing in your drink.:icon17:

And no, snow tires are not an option with me. She'll stay parked for the duration. I have a Civic that gets most of the commuter/winter duty.

We're getting close here in Toronto. What was your winterization process OP?

Nothing. My Z is parked inside a heated garage. I start the engine weekly to keep the oil "flowing". Besides that, nothing.

(Except waiting for winter to end!!:shakes head: )

Best practice would be to get an oil change before you store her, fill her up with some fresh fuel and over inflate your tires to prevent flat spots...
At least that's the checklist I would follow.:tiphat:

Draxxus 10-15-2009 07:44 PM

Suppose to be 13-14 tomorrow and Sat so I might go for one more run around town before the perma park

WoZZer 10-15-2009 09:20 PM

I've not given up yet. The roads were almost dry driving home from work, although the ditches have some snow. With warm temperatures in the forecast for tomorrow, hope to make this a Z weekend as much as possible. Supposed to get some good weather until Nov. so DON'T GIVE UP YET.

Yeah, but you live N.E. of Edmonton. I live on the ridge, west and a little north of Edmonton. We get most of the weather here first before you guys. AND, most of the precipitation falls here. For example.... Edmonton got 2.5 inches of snow in the past three days. I got 6.7 inches at my property. The roads are snow covered from the Yellowhead highway north of Spruce Grove. There's not a chance I'm taking the Z out on that.

This morning (Thursday), the roads were so bad that I was doing only 60kms/h most of the way into Edmonton. And that's with a Civic with great tires.

I know, I know.... we'll probably get "some" better weather before it really hits. And I guess it's just like sex.... it aint over 'till it's over. But this is really depressing. Not being able to enjoy a full power burn in the Z until late March or early April. :icon14:

I could just cry...:(

370Zsteve 10-15-2009 11:04 PM

I suddenly pity my Canadian friends...................damn only 7 months of Z season.................................. :icon14:

Here in CT we'll see snow, but it's not often that it hangs around for long. I can't imagine not driving it in the winter. One of the reasons I'm getting it (just a few more weeks, w00t) is that my motorcycles don't see much road during the winter.

Thanks for the understanding but sometimes even 7 is pushing it. However, I did get out today, and drove on frozen slush until I got to the main highway which was dry (but cold). So, I got one more day in and hope to tomorrow as well. Edmonton roads were in good shape and hope that 6MT's roads clear up for him. We still have snow at home and almost makes me cry to see the slush dripping off on the shop floor. Oh well.... had fun anyway.

No salt on roads I hope!

Extra set of wiper blades. Rainy and 16C (61F). Welcome to the Wet Coast ;P At least its warm even if it is soggy....

jookiyaya 10-17-2009 02:14 PM

i heard this winter will be the coldest since 2006ish. already im doing mods in my garage because its cold and rainy outside. maybe i gotta jump the bandwagon and decide to park her in the garage for hibernation until next year =/

Snakes709 10-17-2009 09:20 PM

Well unfortunely i have to use my 370z in edmonton through the winter. And since i couldnt find winter steelies...i was forced to spend $1500 on winter tires to fit the stock rims. I went 1/2 a day in that snow and decided it had to be done. Didnt matter how i drove, that car is defently not able to drive safely in the snow with stock tires (no ****..i know) but my cobalt did pretty good on stock tires in the snow. The morning i woke up and there was all that snow, it took me 5 mins to get out of my parking lot (approx. 40meters)...tires kept spinning like crazy...VDC would cut all my power and the car would want to stall. Go out of the parking lot and almost fish tailed into a school bus. Got to the gym for morning PT...got stuck there, had to get my friends to push out of the parking lot. I also find that its more dangerous to drive with the VDC on. When its on and im driving it will kick in, obviously when the tires spin. But the sudden change to the car causes my driving to go right out the damn door.

So $1500 for my 4 tires (front ones have to be orderd in though) Just with the rear tires it made one hell of a difference.

But yea, i feel your pain to 6MT. Also is the driver of the white 370z (believe it was touring) That was driving on 97ave that day, around noon hour

kenchan 10-17-2009 09:43 PM

my hobby cars hibernate every winter. :) this year i got these little ramps called flatstoppers from raceramps. going to try them out on the Z. it's suppose to distribute the weight of the car to a larger area of the tires to prevent flat spotting. :p

Flatstoppers ™ - For Long Term Vehicle Storage, Stops Flat Spots from Forming on your Tire during Storage! | RaceRamps.com your best solution for Lightweight Car Ramps!

without it, i usually turn the tires every 3 weeks... psi at 42.

Snakes709 10-17-2009 11:33 PM

anyone ever thought of putting the car on jacks to prevent flat spots? lol I got my bike on stands right for that reason...and also im working on it throughout the winter

Or just do the "normal" jack the car up partially to take some of the weight off the tire and block it.

kenchan 10-18-2009 10:36 PM

naw, i dont like going to my garage in the winter and seeing a lifted car. :D

hey, part of this hobby is to admire my car. i dont even open the garage while there's snow outside.

Been to the west coast a few times and I love your moderate temperature but I absolutely could not stand the 'one minute it's sunny, the next it's raining' climate. This is why I've hated this past "summer" over here because we had a very, very soggy summer. In the latter months, I hardly washed my Z because it would just rain the next day :shakes head:

Draxxus 10-19-2009 06:18 PM

I'm still driving her

6MT 10-19-2009 10:53 PM

As I left my house today I was thinking, maybe I should take the Z today...(?) And after seeing the nice dry weather today, I'm kicking myself for not taking her. So I didn't. What about tomorrow?

Weather looks good.... stay tuned.

6MT 10-20-2009 08:54 AM

Woooo!! I drove the Z today!! First time in three weeks. Maybe the last time till spring (?)

takayuki 10-20-2009 06:30 PM

i envy you.... ugh..i parked and uninsured my car too soon.......

j.arnaldo 10-21-2009 12:44 PM

...one of the few advantages of the Tropics, I guess! Greetings from Puerto Rico, dudes!

Move the car. Don't muck up the tires by leaving them in one position for the winter. Drive it around the block, at least. Put a trickle charger on the battery unless you don't want it to last more than about a year. And when you do start the engine, let it warm to operating temp and let it run for awhile after that to clear out condensation.

^^^^
Advice I got from a mechanic many moons ago. :icon23:

6MT 10-21-2009 02:42 PM

Maybe I'm missing something here. I have never, repeat never had to "move" a car or jack it off the wheels to store it for winter. Our winters are long in Canada and in 25 years of storing vehicles through the winter, I have never had "problems" or "issues" with tires or wheels after storage. I'm not sure where you guys are getting this from (?).... it's really the first time I've heard of anything like this. Is it that I've always stored them in a heated garage?

Confused...

takayuki 10-21-2009 09:09 PM

i'm not sure if we'll have problems with flat spotting. Low profile tires have stiffer sidewalls. I've stored a couple cars in the past without moving it, never had a problem... as long as the tire kept air.

Draxxus 11-01-2009 01:50 AM

Well I am now in the club of parked till snow ment

j.arnaldo 11-01-2009 10:40 AM

The exact opposite applies down here, dude! The blazing sun kills the glossy finish on the paint job. I live in a condo', so my '04.5 Touring Coupe hardly ever sees a shade. The only advantage to the Caribbean's weather is that I can ride her 365 days a year. Greetings from Puerto Rico, guys!

Draxxus 11-01-2009 12:50 PM

damn I wish lucky you
Greetings from the soon to be white Canada

Sibze 11-01-2009 12:57 PM

Ya :( I have had mine parked for a little while now :'( I miss her!

Draxxus 11-01-2009 02:02 PM

meeeeeeee to, me to.

Moonlitebiker 11-01-2009 04:10 PM

Man I feel your guys pain. We are still in the mid to upper 80's here. Oh wait, I guess I don't feel your pain. All I feel is the warm sun beating down on my skin. :rofl2:

Still... I haven't picked up my Z yet so really you have it better than I do. I'd rather have snow outside and a Z in my garage than sunny weather without a Z.

But soon I will have both!

A common misconception about Canada.... however I could use a third garage and an igloo would be a lot cheaper..... ;P

On average we don't even get to freezing here in Victoria
