Does size really make a difference

The stock package is great for braking, it's downsides are only really in heat dissipation and total weight. If you are warping rotors and not coming from a track then it could have simply been you parking it hot after a carving run which will cause them to cool unevenly. If you get the brakes hot drive around a little before stopping. Just a few minutes can make a couple hundred degree difference.

Replacing stock rotors is also not terribly expensive. You could replace the front OEM rotors once a year for ten years before you made up for just an initial upgrade price.
