Replacing Brake Fluid

This is my first Nissan. Have always owned Honda. Z is a blast to drive. Was looking at the maintenance schedule and saw no mention of changing the brake fluid.

Default Replacing Brake Fluid

This is my first Nissan. Have always owned Honda. Z is a blast to drive. Was looking at the maintenance schedule and saw no mention of changing the brake fluid. (This was a big deal with Honda - every 3 years) Does anyone know if this brake service is necessary on the Z?

yes, it is necessary but i too dont know wat the maintenance schedule says.

usually for me though i drain and fill every 20K miles or if the brakes feel softer. i dont see the point in doing this sooner unless you track the car often and your brakes tell you they need to be bled.

This probably has less to do with the car brand than how you use it. If you plan to track your car or drive enthusiastically, you probably want to swap the brake lines for teflon/stainless steel. That will do two things: 1. it will preserve your brake fluid since there is very lttile water uptake with the teflon/stainless lines, and 2. change the fluid for a good quality DOT 4 or DOT 5.1 (never use DOT 5).

In terms of when to change it, with the rubber brake lines, probably yearly is a good idea. With the teflon/stainless lines, I don't know, but if you track the car, then probably every 20k or so.

Thanks to all for responding. I will not track and I rarely do any spirited driving. There is NO mention of brake fluid bleed and replace. I guess I can stick to the typical 3 year service interval.....

Does anybody know the Resevoir capacity? I am installing SS Brake lines and changing the fluid to a ATE Super Blue and need to know how much fluid to buy?

You should be able to do the fluid swap with 500 mL (17 fl oz US) or less.

It took 3 bottles of AP Racing fluid (about 3 pints I think) to flush and fill after installing the new lines. I made that change last fall and it is amazing how good it feels, especially with ABS not thumping.
