Pulsating in the brakes?

Hello,

My 370 is a AT and has around 710 miles on it. I've noticed that when braking I feel some slight pulsating in the brakes. I guess i'm concerned because my 350z's rotors were like that, much worse, when they were going out.

Is this normal? Mind you I was driving bare foot and when braking it rumbled and pulsated mildly.

Maybe it's just the nature of the BBK? My 350z is a base and the 370z is a touring with sport package.

There shouldn't be any pulsing to speak of, that would be a sign of rotor run-out or improperly installed/torqued wheels. If your wheels where removed at any time you might want to check on that, or it could have come from the dealer like that. Back-off all wheel nuts slightly (1 wheel at a time) and re-torque to 80 ft/lbs. Make sure they didn't install the incorrect locking nuts.

Have you done any hard driving that would possibly have overheated your brake pads? If your pads get really hot and then you stop the car, there could be some pad material that has transferred onto the rotor causing a vibration.

How hard were you braking? That could've been the ABS you felt.

You haven't by chance sprayed cold water from a hose onto hot brake rotors, have you? Because that can make them warp. Sometimes people make that mistake when they go to wash their car right after driving it around.

I worried about this...but what happens when you have hot rotors and drive through a puddle?

Driving through a puddle isn't quite the same as hitting it directly with a continuous stream of cold water from a hose. A sporadic splash of water isn't really going to hurt, as the water will probably vaporize on contact anyway. Plus, as you continue driving and apply the brakes, the pads will wipe away the water. What I have in mind is more along the lines of something that happened to a friend of mine. He was out one day with his gf, and as they headed home he told her he wanted to wash his car. So he pulls into the driveway and goes inside to put away some stuff, take a leak etc. Meanwhile, his gf thought she'd be helpful and pull the hose out. She sat there blasting each of his brake rotors non-stop because, in her words, she thought 'it was cool how they sizzled and steam came shooting out of the wheels when she hosed them off'. By the time she was done, the rotors weren't even warm anymore -- they were cold. And sure enough, my friend's rotors were completely ruined.

Anyway, sorry for the long-winded story. The only point I'm trying to make here is that when I mentioned hosing them off, I wasn't thinking of a little splash like you might get from driving through a puddle. I was thinking of a complete soaking along the lines of what happened to my friend.

I have an AT Touring non sport... might be a long shot, but is it just the AT downshifting for you automatically? Kinda bugs me because I can feel it while braking.
