Just had an incident last night at a local car show where the wind was so hard, it actually blew the hood off of the rod :icon14:. Luckily there was no damage. I just placed an order for a set and can't wait to get rid of the "rod".

John@Z1 06-13-2012 03:22 PM

Thanks Mults!

Thanks, I noticed that order this AM.

How hard do they push the hood up? Our hoods are light and I have seen some struts that rocket the hood up at 50mph, lol.

Spencer@Z1 06-14-2012 10:08 AM

They are softer force than some of the other modes I have seen first hand.
50mph... I would say no but they will lift on their own after about 1/3 the way up so if you lift it in a hurry as if you were helping it up it will likely have a little snap to it.
I went through 8 different strength sets until we found what we liked best, I reduced it substantially from where I started. I know we are using 50% less force than of some others I have seen out there.

'10Anamoly 06-14-2012 11:07 AM

Got a vid? I'm an easy sell if I can see it in action. Would swing by but I'm out of town for a bit.

Ron 06-14-2012 12:09 PM

Where do the ball studs attach to? I just looked at the engine compartment and did not see where they would mount.

Havok 06-14-2012 12:21 PM

There is a plastic rivet clip on the front of the brake cubby cover, just pop it out and remove from the top side. You will have to reach into the fender, get behind the fender liner (it just snaps into place) install the lower ball stud mount with the provided lock nut (when you install the ball stud it has a captive washer get this washer under the brake cover so it lays over it).
Then install the hood brackets with the ball facing inboard.
Snap the parts into place and then the final lock pins on the hood bracket end (note that the "sloped" ball socket on the strut rod goes forward).

Thank you sir!

svmtbman 06-15-2012 10:55 AM

Just got mine today and I'll probably put them on tomorrow. Thanks on the installation notes as i realized there were no instructions in the box. It looks pretty straight forward after reading the description above.

Spencer@Z1 06-16-2012 09:22 AM

No problem, just let us know if you need anything.

I was reading back over my install notes and I think I wasn't exactly clear about the first that rivet pin isn't really behind the fender liner, it is just further inboard (in the pocket where the upper control arm recess is). I think I may have been complicating it a little bit.

svmtbman 06-16-2012 03:13 PM

Just put them on and I have to say this is the easiest mod I've done so far. It took maybe 10 minutes to do the install. I didn't have to move the fender liner, on my '11 you can reach right up above the front tire and reach the back side of the hole when the clip is removed. I just put the nut on my finger and lined it up and then threaded the ball stud onto the nut.

When you open the hood the struts do not lift the hood on their on (which is a good thing), you basically lift the hood and it feels weightless. You can stop at any point and the hood stays there. It's also pretty easy to close as well.

GaleForce 06-16-2012 09:07 PM

Is it possible to get the struts all black instead of chrome?

I agree, this was a very easy mod. The only thing that I had to do was lift the car about an inch so my arm could fit into the wheel well. Tomorrow, when I go back to the local car show, I won't have to worry about the hood blowing off of the prop rod. Kudos, Z1 for the great solution!

Havok 06-18-2012 08:57 AM

Got mine on this weekend, on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being easy and 10 being nearly impossible, this would be way below a 1. Very simple and straight forward. If your lowered you will have to jack up your car enough to get ur arm under the fender. I was worried about these because I have a carbon fiber hood, I was worried theyd be to strong or cause some hood bulge, however theres not alot of weight difference in the carbon fiber and the stock hood, as of right now I would say these are safe for carbon fiber, with no hood bulge and no real stress that I can feel because of them. I would recommend these to everyone. Id def say its a must have and the z should have came from the factory this way.Im going to get pictures and a video up for those of you questioning or that are on the fence and have doubts. the only downside is that I feel that it should have came with some sort of directions. If nothing else it needed something noting which side of the strut went where. for I could see someone scratching there head for a minute untill they figured it out.

As always Z1 does not fail to impress.

John@Z1 06-18-2012 11:57 AM

Very good feed back guys. We really appreciate that(let's us know to keep the parts coming). Sorry we don't have an all black option.

GaleForce 06-18-2012 12:15 PM

Thanks for the response. I'll put an order in later this week.

kevr6 06-18-2012 08:50 PM

Very Nice Ahmed!

'10Anamoly 06-20-2012 10:45 AM

Hey Jon, got a vid of these opening the hood? Curious about how forceful they are and all..

Havok 06-20-2012 10:52 AM

Im gonna try to get a video up this afternoon just been really busy at work. there not really forceful at all. they dont push much if at all. to me its just like stock but once u raise your hood they maintain that position. maybe i can get a video of mine at lunch.

Havok 06-20-2012 11:57 AM

Maybe this will help some of yall out! im not really sure how to get it to embed but if someone wants to walk me thru it or make it happen themselves feel free!

On the Z1 site it says the hood opens Within 2" of stock. Is that 2" more or less than a stock open hood?

Havok 06-20-2012 12:40 PM

when mines fully opened the hood rod doesnt reach it. im not sure if its exactly 2 inches but it is higher then stock.

Good. I'd rather it be higher than lower. Thanks for the feedback and video.
