Any of you guys do it? Best to stick with just front speakers or am I over estimating how much all of it would weigh? I'm not looking for earth rattling bass, just like I said, I wanna feel the kick of the bass pedal a bit (listen to mostly rock, metal, and sometimes electronic dubstep stuffs).

It's kind of a hard question to answer since the amount of bass that different people would find acceptable is so subjective. You could try adding just door speakers and see how you feel, but frankly the hu in the Z just doesn't have enough oomph to drive aftermarket speakers with any justice whatsoever.

If you really don't want to add a sub and box to your car you could consider adding just a small amp to drive some aftermarket door speakers more efficiently. You wouldn't be getting a lot of low end, but I have heard component sets that are more than competent with midbass response and sound wonderful without the additional weight of a sub, assuming that they are powered appropriately.

There are pretty efficient amplifiers out there nowadays that are designed to accomplish what you envision. I would imagine that you could add door speakers and an amp for a total weight cost significantly under 20 pounds (maybe even under 10). Unless you are a track guy obsessed with decreasing weight this is pretty much negligible. Hell, my laptop bag alone probably weighs 20 lbs.

I purposely didn't give speaker or amp recommendations to avoid jacking your thread. We have more than enough threads in the AV section discussing the merits of various speakers and amplifiers, and we can sometimes get a little...passionate. Even still, I hope some of these general thoughts possibly give you some ideas to contemplate. Best of luck!

op- yah, just get a nicer HU.

my pioneer can push the stock junk speakers pretty well with its EQ and processing.. enough that i havent bothered swapping out the drivers.

What about a slim woofer or an 8" in a fiberglass box? Can't be more than 25 lbs.

Thanks for the info guys. If you have any recommendations, I'm open to them. I have a pioneer HU I'm putting in as soon as the wiring harness and steering wheel control get here.

As for the amount of bass, honestly, If this makes any sense, I wanna feel it a bit, but I don't want the car rattling. I'm trying to just have a nice, full sound with just a bit more wub. More than a door speaker, less than a 8-10 inch subwoofer if that makes any sense.

I'm not SUPER concerned with weight savings, but I really would prefer to keep it below 40-50 lbs, I don't regularly track the thing.

I would think the sky is pretty much the limit for you. I haven't weighed my current equipment but I don't know that my entire system comes in at 50 lbs., thought it might be close. You should be fine to add whatever you like.

Are you sure you don't want to add a sub? Even a small one? I have seen a few people lately who have been having success in adding some bass by putting an 8" or 2 in the cubby directly behind the rear brace. There is some work involved in designing an appropriate enclosure, but the tradeoff is that there is no real loss of storage space in the hatch and the weight gain would be minimal.

yah, the junk cones in the doors arent really powerful enough to 'feel' the bass, but
there is plenty of it at lower volume using the pioneer HU. but "lower volume" is
pretty loud... not loud like true systems but loud enough i cant hear the fire engine
with the windows closed.

my car's pretty loud already with the exhaust so it's enough for me to listen to
some tunes while waiting at the light.

so after you swap the HU, maybe swap the door components and see if you can EQ it to your liking. if not, maybe get one of those small kenwood subs that goes behind/under your seat. those are significantly lighter weight than running amp + subbox.

I'd be classified as anorexic model, but a model nonetheless. Wanna make an agency?

One way to get better sound with less weight. Buy lighter speakers like Alpine SPR-60C Type-R. These use a Neo-magnet in place of ferrite, which weigh typically about 90% less. If you need a sub, have a custom fiberglass enclosure made, much lighter than wood. If you want to loose weight...loosing it off the car is always an option too...you can get a kick *** lithium battery for your ride that will shed about 30-40lbs off the car...done
