Pioneer 4500bt App Radio

I forgot to paste what I sent to pioneer…

I purchased/installed the above referenced radio in June of this year, and recently got around to trying to get the apps to work. I have an iPhone 5 and have updated the software to the most recent update. I also bought the interface cable kit and the apple lighting to VGA adapter. If I connect the USB from the radio to my phone with just the interface cable installed, the "apps" button on the screen will light up, all the "warnings" pop up and it will say "please launch pioneer AppRadio app or other compatible app from your iPhone", but when I try to open a compatible app, the screen goes black. If I hook up the apple lighting to VGA adapter (with the interface cable installed) and plug it into my phone WITH an Apple USB cable, it says "incompatible USB" and the app button on the radio does not even light up. I don't know what I am doing wrong. I'm extremely frustrated because on top of the cost of the radio, I've bought $200 worth of EXTRA stuff to make this work, and still nothing. I took pictures of the different screen pop up messages, but can't attach them to this.
