base side door speakers to 6x9?

Has anyone upgraded the side door speakers on the base model? modified the side door to fit bigger speakers?

You can put a 6X9 in the door by either making your own spacer or buying the spacer from nissan from the bose system. however it really isn't worth it as your going to get great sound from a component 6.5 set and there aren't many components sets that use 6x9's

No need for 3 way as there really isnt room in the front stage for them. Do yourself a favor and do a 2 way component set instead of a 2 or 3 way coaxial speaker.

I did 6x9s with tweeters in the dash; used a crossover.

I like 6x9s in general.

As Big stated you really don't get better sound from a 6x9 in the long and short of it. Frequency dynamics from the footprint of the speaker just aren't condusive as I have found in my years of installing. Some cars yes, but this car I have found the Acoustic footprint to not benefit from 6x9 installs. I have done a few with component 6.5" with sep tweeters and some like mine with a bi-Amp-able 6.75 Focal system and sep tweeters also. I personally recommend the segregated sound as it allows for a better acoustic displacement inside the car. If you are doing this , take the door panels off and the rear stuff out the back - Go to Audio store buy Dynamat and do this or get the Lowes/HDepot Seal and Stick Version. Sound deadening is a must. Dynamat - 100$ or so, Seal/Stick - 16$ a roll does the same thing. Your choice.
PS We have a 10 in our back also, and I tested a 6x9 that I had from a previous GM car - Infinity Kappa 693.1 which was a nice 3 way, but in the end the 6.75 with a crossover sounded the best. Just my .02

Have fun! GL!

Because sound is subjective, I don't think it is fair to say you don't get "better" sound from 6X9s. I think it depends on your listening tastes. It also depends on what 6x9s versus 6.5s you are deciding between. If you like a decidedly warm sound out of your doors, it is hard to beat a quality set of 6x9s.

This is correct and I will agree with you there in all your points valid as they are, and my bad for saying Better I should of said more concise and accurate. Warm often by many audio enthusiasts is coupled with 'muddied' As there is no direct frequency cutoffs being done accurately by the transistors or capacitors which are inline wired to the speaker on design. As opposed to a separate crossover with electronics pcb's to control that. I will agree the sound is decidedly warm indeed and if that is your looking to achieve. To each his own. I was merely making my observation based on the SPL dynamics I took in the 370z with both 6x9's installed and 6.5" components. And you are right, it's not fair that I say it like that. I apologize.

Well, you are largely right on the technical details for sure. Part of the challenge is tuning to what you listen to. For a broad suite of music, I'd say 6.5s. If I listened to classical or largely acoustical music in the car, I'd also say 6.5s. In the car, I listen to a lot of funk, old school rap, and classic rock. That's why I like it warm; and truth be known, it is a bend to the music that is biased to low freqs from the original source.

Very very true on you last statement and Yes i agree with you H2O on that about the broad suite of music, it really boils down to each individuals acoustic preference and genre. Its nice to find someone on a forum who appreciates the differences in technical and audio complexity for creating good clean sound in a car. Thanks for the discussion.
