Installed custom 8" sub box

Just got finished installing these 2 8"JBL subs in my Z.

All done and no trunk space taken up.

I had previously installed a single 10 inch sub, and the only reason I changed to 2 8 inch subs was to save trunk space. After I fired up the stereo I was surprised how much bass these little subs put out. I could not be happier with this set up.

Let me know what you guys think about how they look in the car.

Fountainhead 03-17-2013 01:18 PM

They look fantastic!
1. They fit perfectly, the right dimension drivers and who needs more than 2 8" drivers approx. equivalent to 1 16" in a tiny cabin like ours.
2. They are stealth.
3. Two drivers are twice as loud as one given the same input, so you definitely have a lot of thump.

So How did you build the box? What was your method of install?
Please tell me you made pics of the process, or at least a few of the box outside the car.

Thanks for the post!

Dsevast 03-17-2013 02:01 PM

Thanks! I actually didn't take any pictures. The first box that I made I took a bunch of pictures and posted. This one I was so excited to get done with that I didn't take any.

I didn't know how I was going to make it I debated doing a fiberglass enclosure, but then I decided to just make it out of MDF board.

I pretty much just started with the bottom of the box and made pieces out of cardboard to make sure that they were the perfect fit before cutting the wood.

I have a lot of extra wood left and could make another one for someone if they are interested in this set up, and then I could take a bunch of pics to show everyone how I made it.

Looks good. How big is the box?

Cbtech 03-17-2013 05:14 PM

Looks awesome.

where do you have your amps located?

Thanks! I have it mounted by the spare tire. Here was my first build where I made enclosure for a 10 inch sub and it shows where I placed the amp.

kidkotic2001 03-17-2013 11:54 PM

This looks sick I Like it, two 8" is all we need in our car at least I think so.

37Z 03-18-2013 11:53 AM

Sub Box

I did a sub box out of composite fiberglass that housed on 8" sub, amp rack, and signal processor. The sub box located in the same space, weighs in at 8 lbs. without the sub, amp, or signal processor. I made a speaker grill cover for a stealth finsihed look.

Cbtech 03-18-2013 12:53 PM

Stealth FTW

Only you need to know you got a nice system in there not everyone else.

S.Haq 04-30-2013 07:17 PM

I know i'm late but i've been searching for a stealth box for my woofers and this thing looks amazing in terms of stealth !

Cbtech 04-30-2013 08:31 PM

Not trying to thread Jack but here is my stealth box http://www.the370z.com/audio-video/69472-custom-sub-box-install.html

05-03-2013 11:16 PM

interested in picking up one of your boxes, i have 2 unmounted SA8V2D4 SunDown Audio Subs Pro ''8.

MX52Z 05-03-2013 11:18 PM

Jees that's bad a$$!

snowsurfdirtx 05-04-2013 02:56 AM

im trying to do the same thing, but with an 8" W7. mayyybe two W7s if i have enough cu.ft. for the box without being too massive, and the amp behind the seat. anyone have more pics of stuff like this PLEASE pm me :)

juld0zer 05-04-2014 09:29 AM

hey mate, what are the dimensions of the box underneath? There isnt much room without building an odd shaped box.

I have the Bose audio so i'll need to extend the loom and relocate the amp.
My current box is 416 x 185 x 150mm but each JBL 8" requires 8.5 litres of volume.....

Kudos for the neat install :)

peleincubus 05-18-2014 02:11 PM

Can the op please update this thread. This is exactly what in looking for. If I could get the information I would HIGHLY appreciate it.

Thanks

juld0zer 05-18-2014 03:54 PM

you can use my dimensions - they are the inner dimensions. i used 12mm MDF which i know is thin for a woofer box but you really sacrifice box volume with thicker MDF. Using 12mm does require some precision when using screws as it splits easily.

It is the biggest sealed enclosure you can fit in there. In the end, i had to cut a slight slope into the box to allow a perfect fit with the lid attached.

If you decide to drop the box part into the cavity, then screw the lid on inside the vehicle rather than assembling the entire thing outside of the car you might not need to cut the slop but it will be annoying to hold the box up perfectly level and screw the lid on perfectly.

The reason for the slope and the direction of the slope will become apparent when you have a look at the cavity - it's not a straight up and down affair.

Do you have Bose audio? If so, the amp will need to be relocated.

Also, i am running a single Kenwood 8" woofer. The only way i can see dual 8's fitted is if the OP built a free air setup - ie, just what you see in his pictures and nothing underneath. You won't fit dual 8's in my box. In fact, the width of the box barely fits the woofer!

For the lid, use your boot mat as a template then jigsaw it out as a starting point. You'll most likely need to do a few trial and error fitments and trimmings before achieving a perfect, snug fit. Goodluck!

Thanks man. Do you think if you only used one 8" sub that you could use the other area to somehow install the amp? I want on to power the two mid and tweets plus sub.

juld0zer 05-23-2014 12:20 PM

on the lid? absolutely! depending on the dimensions of your amp it should fit without issue.

but mounting the amp on top would not result in a stealth install... it depends what you're after i guess.

my amps are currently screwed into an old wooden drawer which is inverted and bolted to where the spare tyre would be mounted. it's a temporary thing until i extend the wires for the Bose amp and find a suitable hidden home for both.

you can easily gain 30-40% more cargo space by removing the spare tyre and all the foam. but you run the risk of being stranded - mobility kits are futile for huge punctures so the other option is to fit runflat tyres. the lucky thing is the F10 BMW 5 series can be outfitted with identical sized tyres to our Z (assuming stock Rays 19") so runflats in our size do exist. Only problem is you're limited in choice and the tyres are designed for heavier cars, thus may not offer as much grip as the better non runflats like PSS.

anyway, that's for another topic :D

Hey guys glad to hear you all like my setup. The box is an enclosed setup and it kind of was a PITA to make. I can try to get the dimensions but you will have to give me some time since I have a lot going on right now... getting married in a month, closing on a new house and trying not to go crazy! I have the base model so no bose system so I did not have to relocate the amp anywhere.

Just give me a week and I can get the box out snap some pictures and take some measurements. I know when I mounted the subs in the box it was a pretty tight fit, and they barely fit in the box.

peleincubus 05-26-2014 03:12 PM

Thanks guys. This looks like something I won't be able to do myself. But I really like the look.

I personally do not even want to change the head unit in my car and will end up getting a jbl ms-8 to improve sound quality.

I think some new components, a sub(s) a good clean amp, and a jbl ms-8 should sound pretty great and will look completely stock

wood280 05-29-2014 08:08 PM

8" sub box

could you take some pic of your sub box, i really like that box. i think i would like to have one. just so i can see what it look like in that space.

axmea? 06-01-2014 12:34 AM

Congrats on putting dual 8's in a tiny enclosure. That is a good squeeze. I'm thinking smaller that mfr recommended ft.^3 by a smidge? Only if JL made dual 3 ohm 6" subs and put three of them. That would be more than enough for me.

JustJayy16 06-03-2014 10:23 PM

I would like a box of my own preferably the one for the 2 8s anyway we can work a price out and maybe you can send me one :icon17: pm if interested

!

It doesn't calculate to that. A 16" sub if there was one available, would have more AREA square inches compared to 2x8"

https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q...circle&spell=1

But yes 2x8 in a 370z is very sweet and more then enough. should be very tight.

6MT-Z34 06-12-2014 10:30 AM

Cool!

peleincubus 06-13-2014 02:16 PM

What do you guys think an estimate would be to build a box like that??

Redmann1d2n 06-14-2014 09:46 PM

I like that box! Nice and Stealth.. Personally I don't like anyone seeing whats in my car. When I lived in Arizona people were always breaking into cars. I don't think it should cost too much if you get it right the first time. Wouldn't have to worry much about carpeting the whole thing either....

I was thinking of building it slightly higher, maybe an inch, and go with Alpine type R's or JL.. I suppose 2 DVC 8" subs might be too much??? Any thoughts?

Smashley 07-28-2014 09:13 PM

OP please update thread. thx

wood280 07-29-2014 04:08 PM

sub box

hello can i get one of those sub boxes

husarowns 07-29-2014 06:08 PM

Did you make this en closer + install the the subs yourself? I have been debating on a system for the Z, but have always ran into the trunk space issue.

Also did you have an amp installed?

PoorZ 08-02-2014 04:11 PM

I am interested in you making me one of your boxes for the 2 8 inch subs and would you be able to do it out of fiberglass to keep the weight down?

SwissCheese 05-11-2015 09:32 PM

Reviving an old thread here. This set-up is just awesome. Is the OP still around?

peleincubus 05-13-2015 12:39 AM

yeah i would still like to do this also. i really like the fact that you can keep everything hidden

Dsevast 05-13-2015 09:51 AM

Hey guys sorry I have been MIA for quite a while. I have the Z out for the summer so if anyone has questions I can answer them now. I am hesitant on getting dimensions since it is a PITA to get the box out. I suppose on my next day off I could measure for everyone. Let me know.

pokeyl 05-13-2015 11:33 AM

I put my box on top of the 8" infinity's

juld0zer 05-13-2015 05:23 PM

i dont think any dimensions will be of benefit to those wanting to build a stealth box Reason is the shape of the area where you will fit the enclosure - it's like a trapezium with wavey short sides. To get the basic shape, trace the short flap end if your boot mat (ie the side that fits in front of the strut towers but between the rear glove box plastics. This will be the lid of your sub box but you'll need to get the sander and jigsaw out to trim this piece to fit (remember, it's wood, not floppy carpet so to get the thing to sit flush you will need to trim it smaller to squeeze it in).

The rest is up to you - building a box is pretty straight forward but follow my posts on page 2 for some tips.

OP's one is super neat, i love it. I sold my Z with my enclosure still
naked MDF. I just put the boot mat over it and the amp

SwissCheese 05-13-2015 08:37 PM

Is it possible to get the foam piece out with damaging it or removing body panels? I've never really taken a good look at it.

juld0zer 05-13-2015 09:11 PM

what foam piece are you talking about?
