My guess is you can get some sticky-backed felt strips or rubber bumpers (at a Michaels or Hobby Lobby) and put them on the back of the clip where it touches the cubby lid. This should reduce or eliminate the effect of the hard plastic clip rubbing or pressing on the softer cubby lid.
Looking forward to some pics. Seems like an ideal solution.
