Default Rear Speaker/Sub Box

I had a thought about the area in the front of the cargo area where people normally mount their amp. Is this area large enough for a speaker or small sub box? Maybe a set of 6.5 component speakers for rear fill or an 8 inch sub? Seems like the area isn't very wide or deep, but it is pretty long - for enclosure volume.

How difficult would it be to make a box for that area that can be concealed under the carpet. Any thoughts?

PS - I already have my amp under the passenger seat so don't need to worry about where to mount that.

Once you've built the enclosure it would be sweet if you would post some pics for us! I also was considering something like that, but wasn't sure what subs would fit there. I'm not an audio guy.

CustomBoxMan (look for him on Ebay), has a couple of subwoofer boxes for our cars. You can fit a single 12" or dual 10" subwoofers. I ordered a box for a single 12" sub, so it should arrive tomorrow.

It is flush with the strut tower section with plenty of room to mount 2 amps as well as hide wiring underneath.

I've seen that guy before but his boxes aren't really what I was talking about. Right location but I want the box to be hidden under the cargo mat - as if it were an amp install. I don't want to be able to see the speakers or sub at all. Does that make sense?

Pretty much a box in that little space under the strut bar where the foam was right? That's where I want my sub. Maybe 3 small sub speakers. 3-5 inch speakers. Something like that.

It's discussed here:

Our first 370Z build.

I believe it was discussed in that thread but not built right? Something about the bass won't be as deep.

I ended up with a four speaker and sub setup. Pioneer PRS 6.5" components in the doors, Pioneer PRS 5.25" components in the rear, Alpine 4.100 amp, JL W6 8" subwoofer. The head unit is a Kenwood Double Din DPX503, it powers the rear speakers with 22 watts RMS each, the sub gets 200 and the fronts 100 each. You can fade the rears, I raised them one notch so it's balanced. Not exactly stealth, the rear speakers are tucked in the corner, but you don't notice them in the car. I still need to cut the carpet, but it sounds great.

If you get a flat have you just prepared yourself for calling the tow truck instead of just changing the tire yourself? That is the only thing that worries me about replacing the spare with a sub...

My sub box sits in the spare tire. Unplug 2 wires and the box come out so you can change the spare.

This is what I did. An Alpine 4 channel amp bridged to 2 channels At 150 watts rms, and two 6.5" kicker punch shallow subs (150 watts rms) in a custom made box inside the spare tire. The factory radio has output to 4 channels but only two are used for the front speakers, so I connected an RCA adaptor to the radio rear outputs and wired the amp to that. I also swapped the factory speakers for 2 Rockford Fosgate 3 way speakers. The sound is pretty decent, and those subs sound really good.

Jowe,

Any vibration noise? Does the box just sit in the spare tire or is it anchored somehow? I like that set up more than the one that looks like someone took some Mini stereo system speakers and mounted them. They just look out of place in the car to me. I was thinking about doing a custom box between the bar and the actual strut towers. I do like to keep what little of the rear hatch there is without eating it up with audio but it has to sound good at the same time.

No vibration at all, it sounds really good. I have a bolt inside the box holding the box and the spare tire together. I was going to put a bolt from the top of the box straight down to the bottom to hold he box and the spare tire together, that way I don't have to remove a sub to get to the bolt, like right now, if I want to remove the spare tire. But I haven't been able to find one long enough. As soon as I find a bolt long enough, I'm going to change it.
