Default ipod interface won't charge ipod

Is anyone else having this problem? When I hook my ipod up to the nav system's interface with the supplied cable it won't charge. My ipod screen reads: "Nissan device not approved for charging". I have the latest generation 16gig nano. I thought the ipod interface was supposed to keep your ipod charged as well.

Well, I can tell you I used to have an old pioneer head unit, and the first pioneer ipod adapter that came out for it. It charged like 2 or 3 different Ipod's I've had, but it wouldn't charge my new 16gig nano (same as yours). So then I went and bought a 3rd party ipod car charger. IT wouldn't charge it either. It seems the new Nano's have a different wiring, and almost nothing charges them. Really annoying of them to change it, seems like a scam to sell new stuff. I'm curious if the new pioneer dvd players with built in ipod support will charge the newest nanos.

I think there is an adaptor that Apple sells for it to work properly. I will look it up and post again with the link

Thanks a lot guys. I'm going to go to the Apple Store and Best Buy today and see what they have. If not I will just order it online. It's sort of a crummy thing Apple did with this new ipod, and I'm a little surprised that the Z, which came after the new ipod isn't compatible. I only bought a new one because someone did a smash and grab on my old ipod. It was sort of amazing. I live in a secure building with a secure garage with surveillance. This guy came in 3 nights in a row and broke into various cars, all coincidentaly at a time when security wasn't watching the monitors. Baltimore City Police have the guy on tape and a good description, but they don't really look for people if they haven't killed anybody. I was lucky the guy didn't look in my backseat and take my Garmin Zumo.

Anyway thanks for the answer. +1 rep for all you guys.

I went to the Apple store and got the Schocse model for 25 bucks. Everything seems to work now. Of course the Nano and the adaptor are kinda long. You have to turn the ipod diagonally to fit it in the tiny compartment.

I have the Schocse adapter and the first one was defective due to massive static/feedback noises. Scosche sent me a replacement for free and the second one would randomly disconnect and reconnect but happens maybe once every 20-30 minutes so I didn't bother with a replacement.

So would this apply to the Ipod Classic 160GB and 1st Gen Ipod Touch?

Lol, what exactly does that mean? Nissan didn't pay Apple the 6 million dollar licensing fee to have the privilege of being able to charge iPods? What a scam.

Iirc Apple rewired a couple of wires in their latest ipod/iphone/itouch and apparently Nissan didn't get the memo before the Z's shipped out.

I did a little research on this (why I don't know, I guess I'm bored, I actually use & love my Zune for music playing) and it turns out there are 12v and 5v charging pins. Many chargers use the 12v pins, but Apple removed the 12v pins in the latest iPods. Hence, anything that charges via 12v won't work anymore.

The reason why apple did this is quite obvious...by not taking 12v they need one less voltage regulator, saving board space and money. Basically they just offload it onto the charging device instead.
