Default Anyone with Bose swap in an aftermarket HU?

I've got a 40th, so obviously it's the Bose non-nav. Well, I'm not having luck finding somebody on here who has swapped in an aftermarket deck. I'm looking for the cheapest DVD double DIN without nav, and must flip because I want the largest screen possible. Looking at the Pioneer 4300DVD. Crutchfield gives you the harness and such to make it work apparently but has anyone else used the Bose speaker system with an aftermarket HU?!?!

As far as I recall, Bose speakers are 2 ohms and most aftermarket HUs are 4 ohms. Hooking up the speakers will fry the HU.

P.S. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Replace the Bose speakers and do yourself a favor... no offense of course...

I thought the Bose speakers run off a separate amp.....? Meaning it wouldn't matter what their impedence would be because I'd still be using that amp to power them. 0_o

Perhaps I'm wrong.

I don't want to replace the Bose because they're good enough for now and don't want the hassle of pulling out and replacing the speakers. Personally I think it sounds fine but I want a screen.

Bose thread

I was thinking about it but other mods got to me, that thread is talking about the connections, ohms, etc and what not, i dont think it will make a difference, i would give it a shot, if it doesn't work rip it out and replace it.

Thank you sir!

That's good to know. Spearfish did what I intend to. Hopefully he'll see this thread and chime in to see if all is still good and the subwoofer and such still all work properly.

Have no fear...Spearfish will weigh in! LOL

Yes, I have the Kenwood DNX-6960 which replaced my Bose HU. Overall it's straight forward (Crutchfield parted everything together) and a local shop did the install. I only changed the HU, so the Bose speakers, sub, and amp are all the OEM equipment. There are some caveats to know before you get started though.

First, it all works together very nicely. Nothing gets fried, but you do need a line-level converter to adjust the signals from the Kenwood HU going to the Bose amp. The only thing that needed some work around was the rear subwoofer. With the Kenwood unit installed, the rear sub gets its signal combined with the two rear speakers behind the seats. So, the Kenwood SW controls don't control the Bose sub. To control the SW level, I now adjust my front-rear fade. More rear fade = more SW bass and vice-versa. This isn't a problem, just a new way your system will work.

Let me know if you have other questions. Happy to help.

That's great to hear thank you very much. I'm looking forward to getting a new HU installed ASAP.

Since the subwoofer gets it's signal from the two rear speakers, is there a built in crossover somewhere so that the subwoofer gets only the lower Freq and the rear speakers only get the mid range? Or are the rear speakers getting everything?

The Kenwood has crossover adjustments but they don't seem to impact my setup. Also, the rear speakers are $hit anyway.

Thanks for the link. Searching for "Bose" yields too many irrelevant results.

In order to install a head unit you will need the harness I linked to you above and the antenna adapter, if you want new speakers installed do not run them threw the bose amp instead run them directly off the new head units internal amp or run a new amp. Also run new wires as well for your new speakers.

@spearfish25 With the Kenwood DNX9980 HD, are the "caveats" resolved?

1) Do you still need a line-level converter to adjust the signals from the Kenwood HU going to the Bose amp. T
2) Can the updated Kenwood SW controls modulate the Bose sub?

Sorry for reviving an old thread
