The Kenwood 7140, I wanted it!

OK.... Here we go. Started the game plan for the installation of a Kenwood 7140 today. Let me first say, it's not cheap! I wanted it... It will do the 3G iPhone like a dream, even SMS texting! (No wife means a family vote of 1) Freedom at last!

Kenwood DNX7140 Navigation receiver at Crutchfield.com

I have a Sport, Touring, Automatic, in Brilliant Silver. The Bose was the first issue. The face trim plate is not double din ready. Seems there are no after market trim kits for the 370 yet. (Checked everywhere) The solution was Nissan's trim plate for the Base Audio (Non Touring, Non Nav) Just get one from Nissan, right? So thats what I did... For $174.11, part #68262, and thats wholesale! Thanks to Kevin in the Parts Dept. at Pinnacle Nissan in Scottsdale, AZ. I did not have to pay full boat for the part. List for it was $265.81. It should be here in 2 to 3 days. That hurt!

Gettin' the stuff togeather...

Kenwood will not warranty the 7140 unless you get it from an "Authorized Dealer" You can save 1 or 2 hundred bucks today, if you buy from an Un-Authorized dealer on the internet. But here in the Arizona heat....I wanted it covered by Kenwood for at least the first year. Bottom line, today if you WANT it from an Authorized Dealer.... its $1499.99! After seeing a 7140 pair with my iPhone 3G I was toast! Now for the add ons.

XM Radio adapter w/ XM Mini tuner. $130.00

iPod / Video Cable $29.99

Rearview Camera $200.00

Nissan ANT. Adapter $15.99

Nissan Steering Control Adapter $94.99

Install $483.99

Hopefully it will be installed on Monday. I will post some pics when its DONE ;-) I'll let you married guys total it up and tell me I'm crazy... But it is one fine unit!! Right honey?

Excellent information for those who have the Bose stereo without the nav! Can you please take photographs of the Bose swap-out when it happens? Thanks!

Rep Point!

I'm going to take some pics as it is installed, and some when its complete. I have to wait on the trim plate to get started. Just look over the 7140 and you'll see why I bit the bullet...

There is NO head unit worth this much.....rip off.

Actually, their is one that cost more. The soon to be released Kenwood 9140 at an MSRP of $2000. But, I did enjoy your response, it was priceless....

Yea I ordered the 5140 for my Z last week. It does the text thing for the iphone. Can't wait. :) I also got the Ipod kit. Waiting on the XM and Bluetooth and backup camera till I have more funds.

How hard was it to remove the interior light pod at the front of the headliner? Is this where you mounted the bluetooth microphone? On our cars with the factory bluetooth this is where the mic is, the 3 small slits next to the light. I like a stealth mic install, not clipped on the visor.

Sadly, most of the sales guys are misinformed as I found out. I called Kenwood today because I could not get the SMS to function. Kenwood said that the SMS will NOT function with the iPhone. As a mater of fact, they said it functions with few phones. So far thats been my big disappoitment. But the 7140 is a very slick unit. I love it, very cool.

Arizona Z 04-19-2009 12:35 AM

antennahead;

To tell ya the truth, it looked pretty easy.... But, I was looking at a guy who knew what he was doing, and had all the right tools. I do know this, I'm damn glad I had him do it. The job was about 6 and half hours. With MANY ways to "Screw the Pooch" along the way. If I had attempted it, it would have taken 2 days.... And, "Sorry Pooch!"

One thing we learned, the SAT/NAV Antenna on the roof just would not do the XM Radio. As much as he tried, no go. Thats why if you look hard (Bad Pics) you can see where I (he) mounted both XM and GPS antennas next to both tweaters. It looks good. The Bose system has come alive with the 7140!

Did you mount your bluetooth microphone in that location?

John

Arizona Z 04-19-2009 12:53 AM

The Blue Tooth Mic. is mounted where the stock Mic. was (The stock one can not be used) If I could turn back time, I would have tested the Mic both in the light assembly, and out. I used his phone to call my car to see how it sounded. I could tell he was on a hands free, but it sounded good. In retrospect, I do wish I would have tested the Mic both ways. The system is built up from the outside in... Cam, Mic, XM, and Steering, then the head unit. Testing the Mic. locations is an after thought.

So even though you didn't test it in other locations, it still sounded ok in the stock location. Do people complain when you talk hands free using the kenwoods bluetooth?

john

Arizona Z 04-19-2009 01:32 AM

John;

The stock Mic. sounded pretty good from what others told me. The new Mic. sounds good also. (Not like talking in an echo chamber) I'm being critical here, the 7140 has a volume adjustment for the mic. and overall sounds good. What I guess I'm trying to say is, expecting a hands free mic. to stack up to a phone mic. on a hand set is very hard. We did figure out the if you talk in a regular tone it sounded better than when you try and raise you voice. I'm going to turn the mic. volume up a little more, and talk at a normal level. But again, it sounds good now. I just still think I can tweak a little more. Hope that helps.

Thanks man, I'm still trying to decide what unit to put in the Z. I never use nav, so thats not too important to me, and our company Blackberrys have GPS anyway. I know I want a DVD touchscreen. A few models now put the microphone built into the face of the unit....... a nice feature, but if I go with one that has an external mic, the stealth install, like you did, is important to me..... so thanks for the heads up on the sound quality installed in the factory location!

this is crazy. congrats and rep coming for all those pics. question - steering wheel controls, are they flawless or is there some lag? also, regarding the rear camera, did you guys just drill a hole in the back?

No need to drill through the body, pointing to a grommet.
Attachment 1647
Had to drill through the plastic rear for the camera wire.

Steering: Volume up, Volume down, Source, Mute. Normal Operation.

Hello,

I know the 7140 comes with the SMS but I don't think the DNX5140 does. Let me because that would be great.

May not matter because it doesn't look like it works with the Iphone anyway.

NIZMOZ 04-19-2009 11:36 AM

I read reviews from others that it did. Looks to me like it does. :)

http://www.crutchfield.ca/ProductDet...0&Show=ExtInfo

Bluetooth Ready: The unit is Bluetooth compatible using the optional Kenwood KCA-BT200 Bluetooth adapter. Using KCA-BT200 and the adapter's supplied microphone you can make and answer phone calls from the Kenwood headunit as well as listen to audio files stored on a Bluetooth enabled audio player through your car audio system. You can make calls from your cell-phone using the DNX5140 by entering a phone number from the headunit's on-screen keypad, registering up to six phone number presets, from your downloaded Phonebook information or from an outgoing/incoming call list. This unit all supports Voice Recognition if your mobile-phone is Voice Recognition compatible. The headunit can support up to 35 voices and also supports Key Word Voice Recognition to select phone number category. In addition, the unit features SMS (Short Message Service) so you can send a small text message from your mobile phone using the DNX5140. When your cell-phone is called, the DNX5140 is paused and muted automatically. You are able to register up to five compatible Bluetooth cell phones but only one compatible Bluetooth cell phone can be connected when using the KCA-BT200 adapter. Visit Kenwood.com for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

"I read reviews from others that it did. Looks to me like it does."

NIZMOZ;

I would call 800-536-9663, thats Kenwood Tech. Support and ask about the 5140, and make sure you can SMS from it with an iPhone. Yesterday, Scott From Tech. Support told me "NOPE" on the 7140.

A.Z.

NIZMOZ 04-19-2009 03:15 PM

The iphone might be the problem but not with other phones. The unit at least supports it.

Oh well, not a deal breaker for me. I still love all the features this thing has.

I'm curious to see if you had interest in HDRadio since I saw your XM unit installed. My biggest gripe about standard FM radio is increased advertising content since the economy started to slump, so I'm afraid to deal with the same thing... in high def lol.

Also, can you provide snapshot of the button colors in white? I plan to change out the amber lighting and wanted to make sure the Kenwood HU provides white as a color option.

The above pictures should give folks a good idea of how and where they should get back up camera's installed. I bet the JDM backup camera comes through the same spot.

Thanks again

Ooh! I'm looking forward to getting DDX-814, so I just wanted to make sure this was possible.

Arizona Z 04-21-2009 04:51 PM

Just a couple of things to pass on.

The 7140 Rear Camera start up time is is only a about 2 seconds from engine start!

Total Boot time is 29 seconds from engine start to music!

On the steering wheel controls, You have the use of 4 buttons. I'm using the big up/down switch for volume control. The source button was left as source (A mistake) I'm having it re-done as next track button for the iPod (16g) and next pre set station for the XM radio. We think that will work. The old volume switch is now mute. The point I want to make is the buttons can be programed to do a lot more, Talk to your installer before the job starts about the button programing. It really needs some thought on your part so their won't be any "Shoulda, Coulda" after the install.

Hello Arizona Z. All this information is very very helpful. I was thinking of getting this very unit before I saw your post and I have to say it has given me a really good idea of how I will install and etc. The one thing that would be a great help is if you could specify the model numbers of the different additions, such as the camera, Nissan controller unit, and HD add ons. I have found what I believe to be the correct add ons but want to make sure that they are the same ones that you used. Thanks so much.

thanks alot arizona, i noticed that you got the pioneer camera. Was there any reason why you got this one over the kenwood one? I plan on buying the initial unit DDX714 and then adding things on as i get the cash or feel the need for the extra features. I have read that the navigation on this unit is very good (the reason why i opted to get this unit) However, I do like all the tuning features that my pioneers and alpine receivers have offered in the past. How would you say the kenwood rates in this area.

Arizona Z 04-22-2009 04:46 PM

David,

It's the same Camera, made by the same company for Kenwood, or so says my installer.

BTW: I use to live in Anne Arundel County many moons ago. You near there?

The Garmin part of the unit is a 10, The Kenwood part sounds really GREAT! I was going to do speakers, but not now.

A.Z.
