Default Homelink question from a new owner

Picked up my new 2011 Z Touring w/ sport package on Tuesday. I was sitting in the car trying to program the Homelink for my garage door opener, using the instructions from page 2-48 of the owner's manual. I held in the two outer Homelink buttons for over a minute but the light never blinked. I tried it with the engine on and off, but no dice either way. Am I just doing it wrong or do I probably have a defective unit? Oh, and my garage door opener is an older model that doesn't use rolling codes. Thanks in advance for any advice.
