Kenwood Trim Question

I thought I read that the Nismos didn't need the Metra kit. Question is when I re-install the a/c face plate there is a 1/4 inch gap (pretty large) around

I thought I read that the Nismos didn't need the Metra kit. Question is when I re-install the a/c face plate there is a 1/4 inch gap (pretty large) around the H.U. Are you supposed to install the supplied square plastic trim piece before or after you install the a/c face plate? thanks
