Default Newbies question?

Im new into the audio stuff. I have no idea what do I need to do. I have read some thread and see that people spend around $700 + to buy and install aftermarket amp+sub into their car. I dont want to spend that much money on audio ,but I just need some bass for hip-hop. the question is do I need to buy a new head unit? I think I saw one thread said If we want to put sub and amp into Z, we need to buy a new head unit because the stock+ converter may not work properly, and head unit itself is about $500+. At that price I would add some more cash into it and get a wing instead, and how much would be the cheapest that I need because I know that one of my friend he just bought sub and amp on his own and then he paid to someone to install it for him, so he ended up like just 300-400 bucks

Ps. I would rather buy JL, Kicker, or Pioneer than cheap sub because my friend said those 3 brands are good.

the question is do I need to buy a new head unit? If you just wanted to run an amp and sub, then you wouldnt need a headunit. But you also would probably not like the sound because the stock speakers would be over powered. Most of the time people that buy a system replace the stock speakers in order to compensate for the added bass.

I think I saw one thread said If we want to put sub and amp into Z, we need to buy a new head unit because the stock+ converter may not work properly, and head unit itself is about $500+. You can find a good double din with ipod, bluetooth, etc. for $300-500 thats NAV Ready. If you want just a double din, you can pick up used ones on the forum or buy a jensen or something for $200 bucks. At that price I would add some more cash into it and get a wing instead, If you dont have a wing, search on the forum for WINGTECH or look on my build page. I paid $130 bucks for the sport spoiler and thats painted brilliant silver and shippped. and how much would be the cheapest that I need because I know that one of my friend he just bought sub and amp on his own and then he paid to someone to install it for him, so he ended up like just 300-400 bucks If your friend bought a subwoofer and amp for 300 bucks then my guess was its low quality. You can go to walmart and buy a complete system for about $200. Install would cost you $50 if you found someone on craigslist.

My suggestion, buy a decent headunit on ebay or amazon. A good unit will give you an additional 50 Watts to all your speakers. Itll help make the stock speakers sound better. As far as bass goes, a few people installed a little built in enclosure built by infinity. Its a small 8 that just plugs and plays. Online they are about $180 bucks. That might be a good start for you if you are on a budget.

I would like to add/disagree with a few things here. First off You will not harm your factory speakers by adding a new head unit. In fact a lot of people including myself run with a new head unit for a year or so with no problems at all with stock speakers. Just make sure your not cranking up (LOUD and BASS BOOST). Second a new head unit will not give you 50 watts, it will give you anywhere between 16-22 watts RMS, never look at the MAX wattage being produced by a device because you will never see that.

You can run a stock head unit and use a LOC to add a new amp with no problems at all. However it is easier/cleaner if you just add a new head unit.

Your friends are correct for brands being good but also look at rockford fosgate, and kenwood.

Fora head unit i highly recommend alpine and kenwood for your choices. If you do not want or need anything like gps or touch screen JVC and kenwood make great looking double din head units that will look good and blend well. JL for subs and amps are a little on the high side for price just keep that in mind.

IMHO the head unit is the weak link in the 370z. The factory speakers, even though they look cheaply made, actually sound pretty good (never judge a speaker by its magnet size). And the plastic baskets are pretty common nowadays. (although there are words thrown in to steer you away from thinking "plastic" Like ABS, proprietary, polymer, ect).
Prior to purchasing my front components, I changed my head unit, added an amp and sub, and ran 100 watts to my factory fronts. I was very impressed with how well they handled it, and sounded good doing it.
Matt is right on the money when he says your new head unit will not put out 50 watts per channel. I have'nt seen one yet that will.
My money would be on changing your head first, and going from there.
