The plastic foam piece that fills this area is wedged in tight. Were you able to remove it without destroying it?

The foam piece comes out pretty easy once you take out the plactic trim pieces over the fender wells and such. I don't think theres enough space to mount a 8" woofer there firing up. A 6.5" driver like JL makes would fit though.
