tyvm now what kind of metal would u put that on?

go to a hobby store and look for some brass colored alloy sheet metal. they are already cut in like 1/2" and 3/4" widths so easy to use. i happened to have some brackets laying around from a jcw intake install i did a while ago so use that. i was thinking about painting it black but since the metal matched the color of the satin trim so i steel wooled it until a nice brushed look and i just left it as is. :p

as for the mount itself, i just cut off the suction cup off the mount that came with my GPS unit, drilled 4 holes into the base to hold it in place using small tapping screws. thing is very solid.

Question, what unit do you have. As of now I'm using the Magellan Maestro 4700 and it fits inside the cubby just right so that you don't need anything to hold it in, it's a perfect fit. I just open the cubby and there it is. Although I went out and purchased the Magellan 1700 (7" screen) today and I'm planning on making a custom mount that goes in front of the cubby door. I wasn't crazy about having the cubby door open when I was using the nav, but it is a great stealth look. To each his own. If I don't like the look of the 7" on the outside I plan on keeping the 4700 where it is.

I really like your idea about putting the magellan maestro 4700 in the cubby. But i have a question. How do you charge it, since the power plug is underneath the gps unit?

Just mounted my nuvi in the cubby and will post pictures today or tomorrow. I basically took the adhesive disc that comes with nuvi, used epoxy to glue it cleanly to the rear wall of the cubby (the adhesive didn't stick) and have a suction arm I got at Best Buy that will allow it to extend/move around and still let me close the cubby when done. Very clean, seems very sturdy, now I just need to run the wires under the dash.

I also got the Garmin 1300T which has the USB cable plugged into the BACK of the unit, which makes things a lot cleaner as well.

Update: Now with photos. I really like this implementation. I only have left to tuck the wires inside of the console. I'll likely do that next weekend, just need one of those tools to wedge up the pieces.

Note, the Garmin Nuvi 1300T cable has an integrated FM traffic receiver built into it so running the cable is a real issue. Hide it to much and reception is lost!. The cable needs to be out in the open. While a Garmin 1690 does not have a widescreen - 480 x 272 - color display it is a terrific, new Garmin offering that would have been a better choice for your Z. See Garmin 1690 and it's features.

Personally, I would not opt to have placement of a GPS that requires one to leave a cubby open. Sure if you rarely use the GPS but who wants to be driving around with the cubby open fulltime. Finally, the suction cup mount Garmin using the disc that you glued inside your cubby is notorious for the suction cup letting loose from the disc intermittently for various reasons. A real pain often.

Consider returning your 1300T and going with a 1690.

For those with a Garmin (example Nuvi 1690) that have no integrated FM receiver/receiver in the power cable and with a USB connector a terrific way to hardwire your Garmin is with a Garmon Direct Wire Cable by Gilsson. Part#GUSB5V-B - . This cable can be had for about $24 and can be purchased from various vendors to include eBAY vendors. Very easy to install. On the 370Z it is easily to tap into the cigarette lighter on the passenger side.

Given how much more expensive the 1690T is, I'm quite happy with the 1300T. Pllus the fact that the traffic isn't handled all that well on the Garmin devices, it may not get too much use so hiding the wires won't be a major issue.

And if the suction cup fails (and the one I'm using isn't Garmin's) I can just glue it. But I doubt I'll have to.

So, I think I'm just fine with the way it is, thanks.

Kones.... if you are not interested in the traffic receiver ability and want less hassle running power to the device then just forget using the Garmin provided cable and get the hard wire item I mentioned a few posts back. This will power your Garmin but of course no traffic receiver. Using a hard wire option as mentioned will leave you with your Garmin cable you can use on other vehicles/that is not out of use due to it being used in your dash..

Yes, 1690 is more expensive. Traffic ability on the 1690 is via a built in AT&T connect. Works very well/nice to have where ever AT&T works well.

As for the suction device, letting loose is not just an issue with Garmin mounts. Time will tell for you.

Did you get a 370Z vehicle for your Garmin. Go to the forum mentioned in the thread I mentioned earlier and ask mcbarri to do a yellow 370Z for you.

kenchan 07-07-2010 12:05 PM

yah, im not too fond of that 'eating chips out of bag' look, but if it works for you, great! :D

Yeah, I thought about that with the antenna, and may go that route, we'll see. Not a bad idea though, thanks.

I also grabbed one of the 370z icons already but it was after the pics, I'll probably ask for the yellow, too :-)
