Look at Modshack's custom mount. Search should bring it up.
|
i got a friction mount comeing but dont know where its gonna go
|
|
Friction mounts SUCK.
Invest some time and build a custom mount or some money and buy one from ProClips. They have a bunch of options that beat the crap out of a friction mount. |
I just suction cup it to the lower left sid of my windshield. But I only use it when I go on trips. It's never in my car anyways.
|
I use either the suction cup or friction mount both work just fine.

All the way to the bottom?
I saw one z use the circle that comes with the gps stick that inside the cubby and place the suction cup on that. |

So just curious though.. why couldn't you put the suction cup on the windsheid? I don't think it would damage your tint, as long as the cup part is clean I'd think it should be ok.

http://auffarth.com/Bill%27sFolder/242.jpg. This bracket with a hardwire coming from the cubby hole is a terrific way to go. |

yah, modshack's latest hidaway bracket is cool.
this is my version following his design... the bracket folds inside the cubby while car is not in use. :p http://www.the370z.com/members/kench...nished-far.jpg here's my G. i just bought a ARKON (sp?) cigarette lighter adapter bracket. i tightend down the G's socket a little bit and added a 0.8mm plastic on the plug to keep it nice and tight while in the socket. works great with my 205W as it turns on/off with the ignition. :D http://www.the370z.com/members/kench...14-g-nuvi2.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/kench...313-g-nuvi.jpg |
If you have a Garmin GPS and of course a 370z you will undoubtedly be interested in this link..

Question, what unit do you have. As of now I'm using the Magellan Maestro 4700 and it fits inside the cubby just right so that you don't need anything to hold it in, it's a perfect fit. I just open the cubby and there it is. Although I went out and purchased the Magellan 1700 (7" screen) today and I'm planning on making a custom mount that goes in front of the cubby door. I wasn't crazy about having the cubby door open when I was using the nav, but it is a great stealth look. To each his own. If I don't like the look of the 7" on the outside I plan on keeping the 4700 where it is.

Basically a stick on Garmin mount on a strip of metal as shown in the pic earlier in this thread. Here is an eBay seller selling the stick on mount.. Garmin Nuvi 755 760 765 770 775 780 785 Stick-On Mount - eBay (item 360228726284 end time Jun-22-10 00:30:39 PDT)

i use the circle thing that came with the gps and mount it between the gauges and the steering wheel.

as for the mount itself, i just cut off the suction cup off the mount that came with my GPS unit, drilled 4 holes into the base to hold it in place using small tapping screws. thing is very solid. http://www.the370z.com/members/kench...14733-stud.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/kench...ady-paint2.jpg |

Just mounted my nuvi in the cubby and will post pictures today or tomorrow. I basically took the adhesive disc that comes with nuvi, used epoxy to glue it cleanly to the rear wall of the cubby (the adhesive didn't stick) and have a suction arm I got at Best Buy that will allow it to extend/move around and still let me close the cubby when done. Very clean, seems very sturdy, now I just need to run the wires under the dash.
I also got the Garmin 1300T which has the USB cable plugged into the BACK of the unit, which makes things a lot cleaner as well. Update: Now with photos. I really like this implementation. I only have left to tuck the wires inside of the console. I'll likely do that next weekend, just need one of those tools to wedge up the pieces. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4121/...a38ac7f68f.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4078/...335709ae94.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4076/...f3f40d1a_z.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4121/...a02dcbc3_z.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4078/...9d45eb35_z.jpg |

Personally, I would not opt to have placement of a GPS that requires one to leave a cubby open. Sure if you rarely use the GPS but who wants to be driving around with the cubby open fulltime. Finally, the suction cup mount Garmin using the disc that you glued inside your cubby is notorious for the suction cup letting loose from the disc intermittently for various reasons. A real pain often. Look here http://www.the370z.com/nissan-370z-g...armin-gps.html Consider returning your 1300T and going with a 1690. |
For those with a Garmin (example Nuvi 1690) that have no integrated FM receiver/receiver in the power cable and with a USB connector a terrific way to hardwire your Garmin is with a Garmon Direct Wire Cable by Gilsson. Part#GUSB5V-B - . This cable can be had for about $24 and can be purchased from various vendors to include eBAY vendors. Very easy to install. On the 370Z it is easily to tap into the cigarette lighter on the passenger side.

And if the suction cup fails (and the one I'm using isn't Garmin's) I can just glue it. But I doubt I'll have to. So, I think I'm just fine with the way it is, thanks. |
Kones.... if you are not interested in the traffic receiver ability and want less hassle running power to the device then just forget using the Garmin provided cable and get the hard wire item I mentioned a few posts back. This will power your Garmin but of course no traffic receiver. Using a hard wire option as mentioned will leave you with your Garmin cable you can use on other vehicles/that is not out of use due to it being used in your dash..
Yes, 1690 is more expensive. Traffic ability on the 1690 is via a built in AT&T connect. Works very well/nice to have where ever AT&T works well. As for the suction device, letting loose is not just an issue with Garmin mounts. Time will tell for you. Did you get a 370Z vehicle for your Garmin. Go to the forum mentioned in the thread I mentioned earlier and ask mcbarri to do a yellow 370Z for you. |
yah, im not too fond of that 'eating chips out of bag' look, but if it works for you, great! :D
