If you were pulling the entire crappy bose system out and upgrading the wiring, the speakers and new amp(s) then I could see where an enclosure with a 12" sub would be more beneficial but since it sounds like you're keeping the rest of the bose system minus the hu, then it is a perfect alternative. I don't know anyone that has installed this sub and had any complains about it. It works great.
