How much sound deadening material?

It's going to be at least 5-6 months before I start picking up audio equipment to upgrade my system, but while I want I want to start adding some sound deadening in the trunk.

How much do you guys think I should pick up? I am currently looking at a 36 sq ft package of Noico, but I am wondering if that will be enough. Would a 50 sq ft roll of Fatmat be the better choice? Both brands work about the same from past experience in other cars I have owned, so I'm not all that concerned about picking one brand over the other.

Thoughts?

I am currently installing Noico into my Z. I purchased two 36sq ft packages and i used an ample amount in the trunk area and only used 36sq ft of 80 mil noico. I am going to use the remaining materal for the doors now since I already bought it, so 36sq ft will do just fine for the trunk.

I bought 24 SF of Ballistic Hollow Point on Amazon and did both doors, behind the seats, and the wheel wells. I didn't cover every square inch. This product reduces the road noise by eliminating vibrations. The result is amazing. I didn't take decibel readings, but the cabin noise is significantly lower than before.

It's super labor heavy if you're doing it yourself, so read into butyl rubber vs closed cell foams. Kinda two different purposes, sometimes people layer and just may as well do it all at once.

Good point on the labor. Personally I have always enjoyed getting my hands dirty, even when it was something I needed to go to a shop for.

Zbeach - can you throw up a link? I can't find anything on Amazon.

Depends on your goal? I tell a lot of my customers point blank, if you're trying to make your car as quiet as a luxury car. It's not going to happen, you bought a sports car.

That being said, a layer of almost any dampaner I've been really liking sound skin because it has a foam layer already installed over the dampaner.

If you want to get serious and do two dedicated layers do a layer of second skin fallowed by luxury liner pro

If you're just trying to take care of some rattles go with a simple layer of road kill or fat mat.

That stuff will have a tar smell for a few weeks, I try to stay away from the cheap stuff.

Hey Big! Been reading your posts for a couple of months before my account got approved. Love the massive treasure trove of knowledge you have provided to the forums.

I'm not looking to eliminate road noise, but I do want to try and get maximum reduction of future bass rattle once I put one or two 10's in the back. I place a premium on SQ, so anything that helps that is what I am interested in.

Edit - Looking at the second skin stuff, and that might be the way to go it seems. About double the price, but if it works as well as it seems to that would be worth the investment.

So I can see maybe needing probably 20 sq ft with a few sheets left over. This should do your doors and your trunk lid and your trunk depending on how crazy you go on the doors. Make sure to roll up some of the rubber from a sheet and apply some around the clip openings for your panels to help with vibration as well.

I went full out tweaking on getting rid of rattles last year around this time. I have zero rattles in my car unless I really crank up my subs. I used Noico as it works very well and was cheaper than other brands. However, I think using a sound deadener is really only the first step.

I remember there being a plastic piece or wire on the passenger side near the rear wheel well that was causing a loud annoying rattle. I used some speaker gasket tape and wrapped it, which eliminated that issue. It is very annoying to actually get some foam back there though. It took me about 20 minutes to get it to sit right.

I also lined all the outside edges of my panels (where the panel meets the metal) with speaker gasket tape (i.e. closed cell foam). Like bigaudiofanat mentioned, throwing some rubber or foam around the clips also helps. To be more clear, I took off all the clips, wrapped them in foam, and shoved them back into the panel.

It's very difficult to eliminate all the rattles in the doors. I have about 50 sq ft (possibly more) in just my doors. I think each car will be different but another possible tip that may help is to loosen up your door handles while you have your panels off, and shove some closed cell foam underneath the door handle where it meets the metal. I was also getting a lot of rattles from that section when the woofers hit.

Rattles drive me nuts, so I am sure that I will be spending a good penny on just this part of the build.

The build itself wont come until January-February of next year, and I am currently leaning toward trying to find a build that will let me integrate an iPad. More than likely I will need to get a local shop to help, but from what I have been reading it looks like there is a lot to take into account on the Z when building out a system.
