Anyone interested in Group Buy for Spare Tire Sub-Box?

I went in to a local shop this afternoon and discussed getting a custom sub box made for the spare tire, to accomodate a 8-10" shallow sub. I have to come back when they are available and when I'm not out of town so they take the spare tire and spec it, and make the mold.

I was wondering if anyone else is interested in this, as I mentioned it to the shop guy. I figure I could get a better quote if I was able to secure additional orders for them. If you are interested, PM me your info so I can start a list that I can give them. Hopefully, we can get the price down...

BobQ 12-26-2009 04:15 PM

I am just putting a system together, and would be interested, what sub would it be made to accommodate? also get back on some idea on pricing.

Thanks Bob

HT Rambler 12-26-2009 06:50 PM

I too would be interested pending price. I'm starting my system and the stealth sub is a must.

jikhead 12-27-2009 06:52 PM

I am personal considering either 8" or 10" Pioneer shallow sub. I will be sure to discuss making the box accomodate any brand shallow sub, if possible with them. It will be at least two weeks before I can get the car into them, due to my work schedule, but will post up once I have more info.

roplusbee 12-27-2009 07:06 PM

Sounds like a plan. Please ask about options for 12" shallow sub also. Perhaps they can do a package that includes the sub also.

jikhead 01-04-2010 09:02 PM

Got an update for everyone...my business trip this week was postponed. So I called the shop and I'm going to be taking the car/spare tire in this Saturday for them to get the measurements, etc. I should have some more information soon. If there are more people interested, please let me know. The more the better the $$.

CBRich 01-04-2010 09:57 PM

Are you planning to place the sub in the spare or replace it? If you are placing it in the spare designing in some quick disconnects and ensuring easy removal will be a must have.

tbonesteak 01-08-2010 10:26 PM

im very interested but have a few questions. Why does it need to be a shallow sub if it's going into the spare compartment? It is deep enough to accommodate non shallow subs too right? Is this replacing the spare or going on top of the spare? That may explain the need for a shallow sub. If it is replacing the spare, the box will need to provide the structural support for the cargo area. If you notice, when you take the spare out and replace all the foam, mats, etc, there is no more support and will sink if you put anything even remotely heavy on the cargo area. Im very very interested if all criteria are met and i'm going with a 8" woofer. Thanks1!

I am going to do a sub box that sits "inside" the spare, so the spare doesn't have to be taken out of the car. I would be interested in a group buy for a nicely fabricated unit. I want a 10", and the sub I am interested in is the Elemental Designs SQ 10 Elemental Designs

There are quite a few subs available that can fit a box for this location.

I'm taking it in to have a box fab'd for placement inside the spare...hence the shallow sub. I plan to do a 10", but if you want 8" should be ok. I'm sure they can customize for everyone; or they could just do all 8" and the buyer finish it off if they want a bigger sub (meaning cut more out for a bigger sub). Someone else mentioned connectors, so I'll be sure to get them to incorporate connectors so it can be easily hooked up and removed.

I don't want to lose the spare tire either. This route is cheater than ditching the spare and buying run-flat tires...if you want to play it safe.

Geesh, talk about a bargain price for the sub. Have you had experience that brand? I was thinking going JL but at half the price, this E.D. brand is very appealing. The quality can't be THAT much crappier than the JL am i wrong?

I have not personally owned one, but have spoken to people that say they make very nice subs......... high on the SQ scale, with decent slam. I am more an SQ guy, as long as it hits reasonably hard, but don't need to win any DB contests :p The user reviews on that link were excellent as well.

same here. SQ is what it's about for me. Z isn't an SPL type of a car anyways. I'm gonna cross shop this one and Kicker Comp 07C104 10" 4-ohm subwoofer at Crutchfield.com which seem to have good reviews as well.

tbonesteak 01-09-2010 11:47 AM

and for 5 dollars more than the kickers, Infinity 1052w Reference Series 10" subwoofer with dual 4-ohm voice coils at Crutchfield.com may be awesome as well. I've never had any experience with Infinity tho...are they good?

How shallow is shallow? Would a 4.5 inch mounting depth be too deep?

sylenze 01-09-2010 01:43 PM

im interested as well pending on price...

jikhead 01-09-2010 06:03 PM

Well, bad news from today. So I went into the shop this morning and right away was hit with a stonewall with the shop owner. I got quite the bit of round around with "I'm going to buy my sub from them?" and such. I told them I would if that was the stipulation of the custom sub (although they didn't have anything I really wanted). They told me to come back in the afternoon, so in the meantime, I went down to another shop who did carry the sub brand. Although they didn't do nearly as much fab work, especially fiberglass, he estimated around $600 for the work and $50 or so for parts. When I went back to the first shop, they tried to talk me out of doing this for varies reason and I won't go into that. So I never got a real estimate from them because they didn't think it would be worth it. They were afraid of it not sounding good but $1000 got tossed around in the conversion.

So with that said, I don't plan to pay anywhere near that kind of cash for the work. I'd prefer attempting to do it on my own, or waiting for someone else to release a stealth box. Feel free to comment, and if the couple of other guys who've made this custom box, please let us know your comments and how your sub sounds for input. Thanks.

thats what i have and the wires inside the subwoofer that give it power keep on ripping on me no matter what i do. so i dont think its worth it

tbonesteak 01-10-2010 11:55 PM

Very interesting armen.....you're not the first person i've heard this from. I guess kickers are the way to go at 45 bux a pop. Unbelievable price but they're not shallow mounts.

i payed 75 for mine buts its the 12" inch. the sound quality is good but those wires keep on ripping. All together there are 4 of them. The first time only one of them ripped but after I attached it back all 3 of them ripped. After that I replaced all 4 wires with thicker ones but those ripped on me too.

i honestly dont know if i should fix it again or if i should just throw it away :shakes head:

Back on topic of the thread, I'm going to try and build a box this weekend (barring anything unforeseen that comes up). I plan on taking MDF board and and will stack rings up to give it the depth. Based on another thread who did similar thing but removed the spare, I will probably buy both 3/4" and 5/8" sheets. This is because I noticed he used several layers of 5/8" but it looks a little too tall. Using both sizes might get the right depth inside the spare tire. I've been taking some measurements tonight, but I need to run some calculations in my head. I'll let everyone know how things are going once I start on it Saturday.

jikhead 01-15-2010 06:49 PM

I picked up supplies today at lunch, and I'll be working on the speaker box tomorrow. I'll post up pics tomorrow evening.

Sigur 01-15-2010 08:40 PM

Take lots of pictures along the way. I'm very interested to see how it comes out.

jikhead 01-15-2010 09:46 PM

I think this sheet of MDF could net 3-4 boxes...we'll see. I'll make sure either you can do it when I'm done or I perfect it a bit more and sell them for you guys.

jikhead 01-16-2010 07:38 PM

I'm going to start a new thread for this..I'll be back shortly with the link.

That is very interesting, Specialy in this economy.

However good news is, we are currently making plans to work on a 370Z and Making a Fiberglass version of this enclosure keeping the spare tire. Price will be a lot ALOT better then what you got quoted, If you can wait. It will be worth it.

jikhead 01-20-2010 07:26 PM

I'm actually done, but would still be interested in it.

roplusbee 01-20-2010 09:51 PM

Uh oh! Could this be what we are looking for?

Excellent. I sent you a PM yesterday asking if you would do this, as I am familiar with your 350 box. Can't wait to see the finished product!

I just want to point out that it's strictly against the forum rules for ANYONE to start a Group Buy unless you're a supporting vendor. I'm okay with interest threads but if there's a group buy or sale thread, it must be from a paying vendor.

I wasn't asking for a group buy, only if he would consider building the product, as no one else commercially wants to step up to the plate and build one that fits inside and retains the spare. :tiphat:

BOX STARTED

Will be using the spare tire and sit in the spare tire, will be extending out about 1" and using that full area as part of the enclosure. Very trick and Fully usable without loosing ant trunk area at all. We are shooting for .8 Cu ft. Designed for shallow sub and still be totaly hidden stealth. If someone wanted to show the sub we can add a couple rings and get a bigger sub in there as well, but this will stick it further out into the trunk area. Majority of you from what I gathered want it to be totaly stealth... Will still have full use of all the jack and spare tire.

We will be marketing it with JL 13tw5 for the bass hungry 370z owners.
But it will house a 10" sub, most shallow subs will fit.

MORE PICS

What you will see is a wooden top plate which is about 1" thick, that will be part of the enclosure once th emold is done and fiberglass is pulled. Extra .18 cu ft there.
