Default Question about audio.....

So, I swung by my local Custom Sounds dealer to give me some advise on replacing the front components in my new/used Z....
That was my first mistake, no need to go into detail. Won't be back ever...........

So my question to you experts is, having two 12 inch subs in the back, and a JL XD400 driving the fronts, is Focal really worth the bucks? What about JL or Polk or Alpine? What would be a good replacement?

This thread will probably get moved to the Audio section.

I'm not an expert, but from my personal experience, 2 12's in the back is way too much and it will be hard to find a box with enough air space for each sub unless you get one that's custom built. I'm sure it varies from sub to sub, but when I had two 12" Sundowns, I was restricting both of them too much; I had to downsize and remove one all together to get better bass.

Are you going for SPL or SQL?

Did not see the audio section. Sorry.
I did not build this system, just trying to replace some blown components on a custom build. The subs are built into the trunk. Here is a pic of the subs.20161022_234503.jpg

Its all up to your own personal preference and what you want, IMO two 12s would be way to much, but some people want that real "thump thump" I went with a single jl 10 and its just enough for what I want some added bass to the music.

If the system is already built and sounding decent, I would simply do the easiest thing, change the blown drivers. Why rebuild and redesign when it's not needed. Focal are with it yes. They cost a lump buy they sound nice. Ali the cars at home have a sound system and the focal stands out.

Well, I pulled the trigger on some JL ZR 6 1/2 components. Seemed to fit the amp nicely, and it had Z in it. Just kidding... Will post a review once installed...

From my experience
Focal were really nice but needed LOTS of power to get them to there potential

2 - 12's tho . you will need more than 1 set of components to keep up the vocals

I personally say yes they're worth the money. However which model focals? That's another question in itself. I run a set of focal krx2's and love them.

Well, I just finished the install.
The tweeters are a little taller than I expected. Spacer/adapters will have to be thinned.
So, compared to the Focals, they hold their own in mids, but, the highs are quite a bit different. More subdued...
Still an absolute bad *** stereo system in an absolute bad *** sports car!!!!!!!!

I'm a little late to the party but, higher end speakers can be worth it DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU WANT. Also it would be a good idea to amp them. Focal is more for the audio file and seeing that you have 2 12's you really want something that will keep up with them in the decibel levels. Your JL's are a good choice

Also if you have blown speakers already, i'd highly recommend you get your gains set properly and make sure you aren't using things like bass boost and LOUD settings, these can send clipped or boosted signals to your speakers causing damage to them.

Yes , totally need to have the system tuned/gains set... The JL's are driven by a JL 4600, so plenty of power.... The Focal's were partially blown when I got them, so no idea what happened.

The JL's are sweet, and clean, but they seem to be a class or so lower than the Focal's. Once I got them out of the car, you can visibly see a difference in the methods and materials used to make them. Given what I have seen and what I hear, my honest opinoin, for what it is worth, the Focal's, even if they are not the newest version, they still stand above the brand new JL's..........
Grabbed a new OEM carpet, now to find an upholstery shop to cover that ugly fiber board they used........
