How many use a dash-cam?

Hey guys, based on my recent hit-and-run incident, I have been seriously contemplating getting a dash-cam.

However, I have started to think more about this.

First off, how many currently use a dash cam?
- battery operated?
- motion detect?
- does it connect to AUX power?

Second, what about dual cameras that record interior/exterior?
-I was worried about people potentially breaking into the car, not that it has ever happened but it is something in the back of my mind
-what about people who would ding/dent the car and run away??

Third, would you recommend something that is an all-in-one?

Interior/Exterior, rear view camera too. :icon17:

I have a Blackvue 500GW:
http://www.amazon.com/BlackVue-Wi-Fi.../dp/B00B4E9764

This cam has a parking mode which idles when you car is off. (Goes sleep mode) and turns back on and record when they detect a shadow or movement. This is a feature that is included but can only be used if you hardwire it to your car.

TIP: If you have a dashcam only for the front of your car, when you park. Park backwards when available. No point in parking front inward when you get swipped from behind and dont see who hits you.

Furthermore, this dashcam is REALLY HD. I see everything crispy clear and you can also have live streaming as well as download your recordings.

i use a hero2

370Z JT 05-12-2015 12:27 PM

I use a a118c. Fits flush to the windshield and very compact. Day time recording is excellent, night time recording is good.

darkphantom 05-12-2015 12:48 PM

what about memory consumption? Will it recycle the space based on storage or is it something I need to manually do?

Thanks for the inputs!

kenchan 05-12-2015 12:49 PM

for hero2 i need to delete the files, i think, does not write over like dash cams usually do.

I put dash cams in all my family's cars. I have G1Ws mounted in two cars and currently use a GoPro as a dash cam in my Z, but am about to get a dedicated dash cam.

This G1W has been really easy to use and convenient. Also takes great quality video and audio. Its funny looking at recordings and hearing our stupid conversations and me cussing at other drivers. Besides being entertaining I think its a great relatively cheap purchase that could really come in handy.

kenchan 05-12-2015 01:42 PM

dats a lot of stuff on the glass there..

njobe89 05-12-2015 02:27 PM

always been interested in getting one. always get to see cool videos from other people having them and uploading them.

madwi 05-12-2015 04:29 PM

I have a DOD LS430W. Pretty decent, low light auto settings kinda blow. Having gps and speed info on video is helpful in case someone likes to lie about when, where and how an accident happened. If I had to buy again I might check out the blackvue models.
Sample vid *check volume levels, is kinda loud*

I also have GW1c in my wifes car. I agree it takes great video ans is pretty inexpensive, however the connection between the mount and the camera is pretty flimsy. It does not come off when driving, but will detach if you try to make adjustments with any tension on the rotator ball thingy.

SwissCheese 05-12-2015 08:05 PM

I also have the G1W and it works great. It's currently selling for $53 on Amazon. Be carefule with cold weather, though. If it gets too cold, it will need time to warm up before working. I had one stop working after dropping down to below 0 temperatures, but the company sent me a new one within a couple days.

I would like to see a picture of that one installed in your car if you have time thanks

i use a G1W-C mounted to my windshield, behind the rear view mirror. "C" version because in california it gets too hot, dash cams with batteries will explode.

The blackvue I showed you (not sure if case for all blackvue), memory consumption it overwrites the oldest file:

Lets say you have a max recording of 8 hours on a 32gb card.

Records hour 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8. When 9th hour is recorded, hour 1 gets deleted automatically and everything shifts up. so the position of memory become 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 and it is looped. Also you can cut up videos so when you review them, each video will be like 3 min long or w.e u want. Convenient for when you wonna look up something specific. Dont have to dig through 1 huge file like how you look for a certain scene in a movie file.

darkphantom 05-14-2015 07:21 PM

This might be asking for much....but any with connections to a rear view camera? :P

I won't have the backup until I install a new dash unit.

YzGyz 05-14-2015 08:49 PM

I have the G1W clamped to my rear view mirror. I got it for a x-mass preseant and like it a lot. It take clear videos and good audio. The camera looks decent but not super cheap. This reduces the chance of someone smashing the window to try and steal it. I took a sharpy and colored in the chrome part to make it a little more stealth. For the price, you can't beat it. It's also my anti fun device for when I valet the car. They see the camera on and recording so valet drivers tend not to do stupid things knowing that I can easily prove any mishaps.

When I got my dashcam I wanted the back too. "Why not go all the way" right? Too bad for me, i tinted my car at 5% rear so i dont think dashcam would work for me. As i suggested before tho, if you only get a front dashcam, just park your rear in and your front out.

Are you talking about a camera that is mounted in the front that records 2 directions or two separate cameras? I heard cameras that record front and back are not worth it. When you mount the camera for a clear view of the front, the rearward video quality is compromised. In a lot of cases, the rear video becomes almost useless because you can't make anything out.

my question is where does the recording go. is it sent to your phone/computer/etc. or does it go on a memory stick that's in the camera?

no, kinda like that guy cleaning his TB blasting cleaner into it while still on the car.. magically disappears... :ugh:

njobe89 05-15-2015 07:55 AM

oh ok, so you have to take the card out and then upload it onto your computer. it would be nice if there was a wireless one that could stream directly to your phone or something like that.
