thats probably your input shaft making noise JJ. when the clutch is depressed you cut power to it so it stops spinning but in neutral with the clutch out it is freewheeling with the engine. as for the knocking on shutoff

could be a lot of things might be the flywheel but mine doesn't do that so i don't know for sure.
