Lot's of reasons. Oil-related warranty claim experience. History of oil analysis, used engine analysis, other stuff...they have a lot of experience with this VVEL engine out on the road around the world that, between Infinity and Nissan, they didn't used to have. They found out that given their oil requirements and the quality of modern engine lubrication that they didn't need the overly conservative drain intervals that they originally thought. My 2008 GMC, and before than my 2005 Denali 6 liter, both have had 6000 mile drain interval since Day 1.

They used to require some silly kind of ester-based oil in 2009 and 2010. They got rid of that requirement for 2011. Gotta love a company that learns as they go along.
