I'll be happy with 540-ish HP to the rear wheels. My intention is also to put 305's on the rear in order to handle the additional thrust.

You're gonna need more than 305's to handle the additional "thrust".
Putting down that power effectively will most likely require
1)stronger clutch & flywheel upgrade
2)more robust LSD
3)the aforementioned cooling systems

That's several grand alone but is very useful in actually getting the power to the ground, even on a stock block.
